The Boston Red Sox gave up on Edgar Renteria just one year after lavishing a four-year, $40 million contract on him, trading the shortstop to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for third base prospect Andy Marte.

The move left Boston without a shortstop amid speculation that it will trade Marte to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Julio Lugo. The Braves needed a shortstop after Rafael Furcal signed a three-year, $39 million free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Renteria made the last out for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series, when Boston won it all for the first time since 1918. Then, the Red Sox made him the centerpiece of their effort to repeat.

Isn't Marte one of the top 10 prospects in MLB? KEEP HIM! Lugo for Matre is a ****ing robbery! Find some make shift SS and use him... It's not like Renteria is going to be hard replace anyway... What's Nomar doing these days?

If Lugo for Marte is Robbery, then Renteria for Marte is Robbery. especially considering the Renteria, even with Red Sox paying some of his contract, makes about 5 million more a year than Lugo.

I think most people on this board agree that the Braves got screwed in that deal. But Marte is too good to just spin into Lugo.

Rent for Marte is also a robbery. Rent is garbage. He always had this look of "I'm gonna K, or that ball is going through my legs" on his face.

Keep Marte...

Marte was #5 I believe. He was defintely in the top 10 though. He was ranked higher than Hanley Ramirez who was I believe 11 or 12.

I agree. Apparently the Devil Rays wanted Marte AND another prospect for Lugo. Man is Chuck Lamar still running the team? Thanks Tampa for asking for too much yet again.

Marte was ranked 9 and Hanley ranked 10..

That may be true however when they're offered a Top 10 prospect for a nice player in Lugo why keep asking for more and more until they end up with nothing? They're screwing themselves right now by not pulling the trigger.

Yeah I just found it and was going to post it. That was according to Baseball America.

According to Baseball Prospects though Marte was ranked 3rd and Hanley was ranked 24th. I guess it just depends on whos doing the scouting.

i agree, we definitly should of taken Marte for Lugo.

If Marte for Lugo is on the table, Tampa would be silly not to grab it and run. Lugo had a 765 OPS last year. That's nice, certainly pretty good for a shortstop, but it's hardly spectacular. Besides, he's just blocking BJ Upton anyway, right?

Wouldn't it have made more sense to make this deal first then deal Marte to Fla instead of ramirez and have Ramirez play short?

well compared to the big Free Agent leadoff/SS of Furcals 777 OPS, id say its pretty good for lead hitters.
