our vertical passing game does not exist. so here's an idea. let's take a series early in the detroit game and just start bombing. max protection with 9s on the outside, let it fly and hope for the best. worst case is a pick 6 but more than likely just a pick, which on a bomb is like a punt.

go ahead and red star me, members of the 'ronnie's 3 yards and a cloud of dust' fan club and wannstache clones. remember you're the same ones that thought it wise to try and pound minnesota on the ground...how did that work out?

I would like to see more deep balls if for nothing else just make the defense think we could do it again, help stretch the field.

Guarantee that will be attempted on the first drive. Joey in Detroit on Thanksgiving will be given every opportunity to make the highlight reels

Still, the ground game is important to win you games. We won't escape very often with 4 rushing yards a game. But I liked the adjustments on the gameplan after the coaches realized that we're going nowhere with the running game.
But all in all I like your idea. Make them respect the long pass from the get-go. Why not try to have three bombs in a row. And if a series is wasted, so what? We're not going to the playoffs if we stay conservative. Try to catch the opposition off-guard. But Mike, please don't try to be too smart!

LOL! Cause joey is great with the bomb and chambers is the ultimate longball guy! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hold on, hold on....We'll Put Ronnie in the slot and throw it to him even if he's triple covered!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait..He will be! Because in a max protection package all the WR's are guaranteed to be double covered unless the lions blitz...!!!

I have an idea..how about we bring in culpepper just to throw the long ball! the lions would never catch on!!!!!! LOL!

I'm torn. I have no reason to rate this thread low, except thecoordinator asked me to...

:)

I agree. The vertical passing game is like a muscle. When you don't use it, it atrophies. To get it going again, you've got to rehab it and that means a whole lot of wasted pass attempts. Scott Linehan got the vertical passing game to work again (first time in Miami in years) by FORCE.

Vertical success isn't just going to happen because all the sudden you decide hey let's throw it deep. You've got to work on it. This week seems like as good a week as any to work on it.

I think it's a good idea to stretch the field also, but I gotta tell you, no coach worth his salt is going to predicate his game plan on attempting to make someone look good in a special situation like that.

If the coaching staff thinks having Harrington throw the ball 40 times is the way to attack Detroit's defense, that's what they'll do. If they think having Ronnie run the ball 30 times is the answer, they'll do that. I doubt either Mularkey or Saban will let Harrington's return to Detroit factor into their gameplan unless they can use it to their advantage somehow.

Do you think that the plays are getting called, but Joey is just checking down too soon or too often? I know that Fiedler used to make comments that there were a number of plays that were called to get the ball down the field, but it just wasn't there, so he didn't attempt the throw.

I know you haven't been a big proponent of Joey's (versus Culpepper) and you have often mentioned his YPC throughout his career as a means to reinforce your point that he's not a "down-the-field" kind of guy (at least that's been my interpretation of your points -- please correct me if I'm wrong).

So, are the plays being called but for some reason or another, the plays just aren't there?

is that right?

Technically, since you would only be sending a couple of receivers out against 4 DB's, although it's usually never that simple.

I think the game plan will be run ronnie all day to reestablish the running game that disappeared against Minny but off of that to take about five shots of 30 or more yds down the field during the course of the day.

If the Lions don't blitz? Not guaranteed double coverage but you're guaranteed to have safety help over top.

But, if we're in max protect and the Lions don't blitz, every max protect guy has a delayed route he'll go ahead and run after he determines that there's no blitzer he needs to protect against.

IMO, the thing that has suppressed his YPC and YPA is his accuracy in the intermediate range (or lack thereof).

He came to Miami excited about the possibility of throwing down the field more.

It's a fair question but given the tendencies we showed under Daunte, and the anecdotal evidence, especially Saban's own admission when I asked him about this, I think they decided to focus on short passes and have basically abandoned the vertical passing game.
