American Indians have filed a new legal challenge to the Washington Redskins' trademark, contending the NFL team's name is racially offensive, speakers at the Native American Journalists Association national convention said Friday.

A petition to cancel the trademark was filed Friday with a board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington.

"There is no compromise with racism," Suzan Shown Harjo, president of the Morning Star Institute, said at the conference. The institute is a Washington-based nonprofit organization that advances Indian causes.
"Power concedes nothing," she said. "You have to go in and make change happen."

The patent office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board backed a similar petition filed in 1992. That decision was overturned on appeal, but the door was left open for another attempt to invalidate the trademark, Harjo said.

"The Washington football club name has been determined by three trademark judges and the majority of native Americans to be offensive," she said.
Bob Raskopf, an attorney representing the NFL and the Washington Redskins, said Thursday he couldn't comment on the petition because he has not seen it yet.

The petition was filed by six American Indians ranging in age from 18 to 24. It states that the Redskins trademark should be canceled on grounds that it is a "pejorative, derogatory, denigrating, offensive, scandalous, contemptuous, disreputable, disparaging and racist designation for a Native American person."

I don't see how this is a concern of the courts or the government. Is there a Bureau of Football Mascots that I'm missing?

im sick and tired of hearing abouth the "native americans" complaining about there logo. its not like they go around making fun of indians before there games

Some people piss & moan just to be heard, Anybody complaining about the 'skins logo should understand they're paying tribute to a native culture, not making fun of it. There's so much more crap out there to be b!tc#ing about! RELAX...

Here a link on why they find it offensive.
Back not so long ago, when there was a bounty on the heads of the Indian people...the trappers would bring in Indian scalps along with the other skins that they had managed to trap or shoot.
Well, the term "scalp" offended the good Christian women of the community and they asked that another term be found to describe these things. So, the trappers and hunters began using the term "redskin"

Paying tribute to them by using a DEROGATORY TERM as their name?

"Redskins" is just as derogatory to Native Americans as the term "Coons" would be to blacks.. The original skins owner was a notorious racist.. The logo itself is OK, but the name truly is not..

Dear NFL,

Please consider my face as the logo for the soon to be "Whities" franchise of South Dakota.

Thanks in advance,

A White Guy
