I'm attempting to find out why we couldn't run in those first 3 series which totaled 6 plays..
ATL plays a 4-3 D.

1st series
On our very first play which was a hand off to the left , the following OL assignments happened. Double shift to the left with fasano on the line and Epps off the line to his left.
Epps- got to outside LB and moved him back and out.
Fasano- doubleteamed DE with Mutha, move him back.
Incognito- moved his man out not allowing penetration.
Left side solid blocking...
Pouncey- intially clipped the man Incognito was blocking and moved to the ILB, didn't get solid block, but got enough to disrupt LB's movement. C+ on effort
Carey- allowed the guy head up on him to beat him to the left (inside) and his man actually made the stop
Columbo, intially went to help Carey's man on a double team then release on the outside LB on his side.. allowed the DE to release free.
This play broke down because of backside blocking, not blocking at the point of attack for the ball carrier.
basically no gain.
2nd and 10.. INT, Fasano didn't help his QB in that situation. OL pass blocking was solid.
2nd Series
1-10
Shootgun formation:
Short pass to Bess for 5 yard gain, good in\out route by Bess.
OL blocking was solid.
2-5
Henne under center for hand off to the left.
Mutha took DE completely out of play.
Incognito maul his man and took him outside out of play
Pouncey uncovered went to ILB and took him out.
Again solid blocking on the left at the point of attack.
Carey's man, who was heads up, again beat Carey inside and took Carey right to play, and help block hole that was there.
Columbo came down and went to block SLB, unsuccessfully I might add.
Fasano lined up on the right, completely swifted on DE who actually ran down and made tackle for no gain..
Backside blocking was killing the running game.
It seem since it wasn't on their side they were relaxing on the play and their Defenders were the ones actually making the plays.. in a game, I'd go a reverse at some point.. provided the right side could contain.
3-5
Shotgun formation, pass play, Henne and Hartline not on the same page, Hartline stop, Henne threw go route.
Good pass blocking by OL.
4-5 punt.
3rd Series
1-10 INT, pass blocking was solid.. Henne's fault, bad pass..
Murtha looks to be a beast on the Left side for the first 3 series.. If colombo doesn't shape up, maybe Mutha could move to the RT spot.. but I must say Carey wasn't the beast I thought he'd be at RG...Pouncey in those first series play pretty well, Carey and Fasano stopped the early runs..funny they knew where the play was going but allowed guys head up on them to beat them to the point..if backside blocking is going to be like this all year, we're in trouble. You've got to run to take some of the pressure off. That's what we witness with ATL after their first series... they came out throwing and we came after them. The next series, they established the run and everything open up to them..D was on their heels then.
If our OL doesn't get it's run blocking down..it's going to be a long game each and every game... and that puts pressure on the QB, which we don't want..
Weak link run blocking for 1st PS game, Carey---He had to grade terribly by coaches in the 1st 3 series for run blocking.
