Phil Mickelson has been criticized for hitting driver on the 18th hole in Sunday's final round of the U.S. Open, but Lefty's caddie told the New York Post that there was never any consideration of hitting 4-wood instead.

"There was never even a consideration about hitting anything but driver," Jim "Bones" Mackay told the newspaper. "Phil hits his 4-wood no more than about 240 yards. A 4-wood into a 10- to 15-mile-per-hour wind uphill is going to go about 225 yards. There was no possible way to hit 4-wood long enough to reach the dogleg if he missed the fairway."

Mickelson went for a par that would have won at Winged Foot, but wound up with a double bogey that made Geoff Ogilvy the first Australian to win the U.S. Open in 25 years. Mickelson's tee shot on the 18th went so far left that it clattered through the trees by a hospitality tent, into the trampled rough. Instead of playing out to the fairway and trying to get par he went after the green and hit a tree, the ball advancing only 25 yards.

I question where Bones was with the 2nd shot and not so much the Driver on 18. Granted, he was hitting his Driver horribly all day, but he choose it and hit it worse than ever...spilt milk.

But dang, you get a break by hitting it off the Hospitality Tent the size of TEXAS, and kicking it back toward the fairway and not worse by having it go deeper into the trees, and at that point as his caddie you have to say...ok, 5 is now an option, 4 is a luxury that you blew by hitting it here...and 6 kills you.

So, for this second shot, forget about hitting a silly slice around the biggest tree you have ever seen, and how about we hit a softer cut and get it within 20 yards of the green. You're Phil "Flop-Wedge" Mickelson, you get up and down from short of the green 9 out of 10 tries. Then maybe you still may make that luxurious 4 and hoist the trophy, or worse case, you dont crap you pants by hitting this tree, taking 5 out of play, and making 6 to finish as a nobody, a mental midget, and allowing this god-awful idea getting so far into your mind and psyche that you are haunted by this single swing the rest of your natural life.

Oh, but what do I know, I am just a caddie you pay to listen to.

P.S. what the heck were you thinking when you tried to hit a 4-wood from 150yards out of the rough and move the ball 36 inches on the front nine...then used an iron to reach the green? huh, what then C-Cup????

I don't question that, I question why my boy Phil couldn't hit a fairway

I like Phil even if he called himself an "idiot." I was in grad school at ASU in the early 1990's, when Phil was there winning collegiate golf championships....I feel bad that he has been pretty unlucky and has had to settle for a lot of runner-ups in majors, but I like him way more than Tiger, who plays and acts like a robot.

I like Phil more than Tiger also, but here goes Roman with another plug of how cool asu is

I'll take Tiger over Phil any week.

I bet right now, Tiger feels a whole lot better, and an easier time sleeping with his MC and +12 over 2 rounds, than Phil does with his 4 round +6.

 Better than those WSU Cougars.

He should have questioned why he used a 4 iron with his 2nd shot and didn't just play out and then take on the green with the 3rd shot.

That what I couldn't understand . . u know par will not be so easy tho it wins u the championship, so u gotta play the hole normal . . once he missed the fairway, which is what he did all day, if u are the caddy u say, hey Phil, lets atleast salvage the playoff, u can still make 4, but 5 gets the playoff, if u hit it in the fairway with this second shot, u have 3 shots from the fairway to make it in the hole, u can knock it stiff, have a putt from about 12 feet and win or 2 putt for the playoff, but if u mess this shot up here from the rough, u probably will double bogey, I mean damn, that is the caddy's job to make him not hit that shot. Phil wanted a Tiger/Pebble Beach moment I think  .

Without doubt. Caddy should have used his balls and taken that club out of his hands.
