After initially going undrafted this past spring, it appears as though former Nebraska Cornhuskers wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp has finally found his first NFL home. According to a Sunday morning report from Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Westerkamp will be signing with the Miami Dolphins.

However, the terms and financial details surrounding the looming free-agent pact have yet to be reported or announced by the AFC East franchise.

The 23-year-old wide out spent four seasons at Nebraska with his collegiate career spanning from 2013 through 2016. Appearing in 48 career games as a member of the Cornhuskers, Westerkamp registered 167 receptions for 2,474 yards and 18 touchdowns in all. Most recently, as a senior in 2016, he produced just 38 receptions for 526 yards and five touchdowns. Even so, Westerkamp previously proved his worth en route to nothing 65 receptions for 918 yards and seven scores as a junior in 2015.

I like the pick up. Lets see if he can improve his separation by practising with Landry. But, we are extremely deep at this position, and I think he has steep odds of making the team. I wouldn't mind him on the practice squad though. Guys like him, Onwesu, Morgan, and a few other WR's are co.peting for only a couple of practice squad spots.

Westerkamp is an interesting slot/returner option. More of a developmental type player, but he has good hands and can make people miss in small spaces.

why another WR? Don't we have other positions of need?

Would expect to read soon that Ford is going to need surgery - or best case scenario he is going to miss significant time like Scott thus the signing.

Because the team has an idea of how many receiver bodies they want/need in training camp and they're currently down two with Scott and Ford out.

I'm thinking Miami might want to look at the waiver wire at the end of camp for a veteran receiver. Stills, Landry and Parker should be fine, but if one goes down you're asking a young and inexperienced Carroo to step into a starting role. Maybe with Fasano and Thomas we're going to see more two tightend sets this season so the starting 3 receivers will get a little more rest. Although I'm sure the plan was to use Sims and Cameron more last season too.

As for the Whitehead signing, I wish they would have claimed Lucky Whitehead a few days ago. He would have been a serious contender for a reserve slot/returner position.

Well even if they had put a claim in for Lucky they wouldn't have been able to claim him...based on team order, but I sure do agree we need someone.

I always find it funny when the team signs someone now, they immediately think there's a huge problem and don't realize it's a camp guy. In this instance replacing a camp guy.

A number of camp guys have turned into surprised roster players. I don't think that's the case with Westerkamp, but you never know. I don't think the Westerkamp signing is the sign of receiver depth issues, but in general I think we're inexperienced and raw at the position outside of the starting three. Right now the reserves are Carroo, Grant and several rookie undrafted free agents.

This signing could be multi purpose to add to the competition level in camp, have enough WR's in camp for a fast pace offense, be able to evaluate another player that may not make the team, however could be a valuable asset on the practice squad in case of injury during the season and give him time to develop with the team.

Videos on this kid are interesting. Full disclosure though, i know nothing about college conferences and the type of competition he was up against.
