Report: Lucchino still wants A-Rod

the amount of crow being eaten on this message board wouold make the CROW an extinct animal if AROD went to Boston.

Alex Rodriguez nearly became a member of the Boston Red Sox back in 2003. Maybe someday he still will.

According to a report on the Web site of the New York Daily News, the Red Sox will make an aggressive push at Yankees' third baseman should he hit the open market this off-season.

Of course if he opts out of his contract the Sox will talk to him, it's the smart thing to do even if they're not interested. Not sure if they're seriously interested but should make for an interesting off season for sure.

Personally I'm not crazy about spending 30 million plus on one player even if it might be the best player in baseball.

Of course you have to consider the source being the NY Daily News and not any of the Boston papers.

I know it will be so funny. Especially with the Yankee fans saying how they didn't need him etc.

The fights going back and forth will really piss off the non-Sox/Yankee fans.

I'm not one saying we won't need him. We do.

But for Boston to get AROD they would finally have to move Manny I'm guessing. They couldn't afford keep Manny, AROD, Ortiz, JD Drew, and Dice-K and still be able to field the rest of the team without sending their payroll way above $200 mill a year. Which they might do. They might try to match NY dollar for dollar finally. But I don't think Boston would go that high.

For Boston to go after ARod they would have to move a couple "name" players. Im guessing Schilling, Manny, Lowell, and Tavaraz would all be gone to clear some payroll. Who knows maybe more.

Boston should talk to him to drive up his price and make NY pay more for him, but on the other hand the time you waste doing that you could spend actually trying to make your team better instead of playing a stupid game trying to F' with the competition. Not to mention if they call you on your bluff, your then on the hook for $30 mill ++ a year for one player for the next decade! So,...

The Red SOx will go after A-Rod and I would love to see him play at Fenway. I really can't say anything bad about A-Rod because of what he said about Dan Marino. Lowell and Schilling are both free agents at the end of the year, So they don't have to worry about moving them. Anyone think A-Rod would move back to ShortStop?

Have the red Sox been watching Alex the past 4 years? I HOPE they sign him to a $30 mil annual deal.

Well Manny has 1 year on his contract after this year (2 team options after that) so they could replace Manny with Arod by trading him however the Sox lose Clement (10 million), Lowell (9 million), Schilling (15 million) and Piniero (4 million) next year so they could possibly keep both Manny and Arod for one year. Imagine the line up with Ortiz, Arod and Manny back to back to back?

It's a tough decision for any team trying to sign Arod because although the guy is very good, is he worth 30 million a year? That's the big question.

We have so many young prospects who will be on the team w/rookie contracts that money really is not an issue w/this team.

I think if Arod went to Boston instead of NY in 2004, he would have played much different. The fans would have accepted him from day 1 and he wouldn't have all the stress the NY fans/media put on him (i.e. he wouldn't always be in Jeter's shadow). He probably would have put up better numbers hitting at Fenway for 81 games. Would he have been good in the playoffs? Who knows and there's a really good question to ask.

It's either that or he is just a cancer.

Great physically gifted athelete, terrible teammate, terrible karma.

Oh I agree. Next year all the Sox need to do is sign one or two guys for the bullpen, back up catcher (if they don't want Mirabelli) and a 3rd or 1st baseman (if they let Lowell walk). Their line up is pretty much set and so is their rotation with Lester and Buchholz being added to it.

The big questions is whether to resign Lowell, Schilling (I say no) and Wakefield.

They better re-sign Lowell.. Well, I say that now, I think the re-signing of Lowell will be dependent on his 2nd half/playoff play.

Schilling should be re-signed, especially if he comes up big in the Playoffs (what Schill is good for).. He may have an obnoxious mouth but gives gritty grinding performances which players respect.

Lowell is getting up there in age though and fell off the cliff in the 2nd half last season. He's having a great year this year but if I were the Sox I'd wait to see what he gives you and if he has a big 2nd half maybe talk to him about a 1 or 2 year deal.

Schilling, who I respect on the field, is getting old. He wants a one year deal which is very reasonable but he wants 14 or 15 million for it. He's not the same pitcher he was in 2004. I think a lot depends on what he does from his return but he was a very spotty pitcher this year. I mean Schilling as a 4th or 5th starter next year isn't a bad idea but I don't want to hold young talented kids back. That's why I'm questioning resigning Wakefield as well.
