Report: NFL to add 7th team to playoffs in 2014

The Cards play in the best division in football. I wouldn't say I "feel sorry" for them, but that's a good team and of all the teams that got excluded from contention, they are easily the best. They beat the **** out of Seattle up in their house just a couple of weeks ago.

That wasn't a fluke. Palmer threw 4 damn interceptions and the Cardinals still stomped on their throats. Bruce Arians is a hell of a coach.

I agree w/ you but the played for many years when that division was pathetic, a 7-9 team won that division just 4 years ago.

I don't mind adding another team, but they should do away with the divisions as there always seems to be a division winner sneaking in at 8-8 or 9-7 while a wildcard contender misses out @ 10-6 or 11-5 as of late. Or better yet, don't guarantee that a division winner gets a top 4 seed and a home game.
I love the division element. It's like its own league you can track year to year, see how the torch passes, one-upping teams year to year, see how you stack up with your rivals, etc. Our rivalry with the Pats or Jets loses a TON of luster and edge if all three of us can make the playoffs more easily. Same with Seattle and Frisco. Or Baltimore and Pittsburgh. I love the divisional aspect of the NFL.

keep trying to water down the nfl u ****ing douchebag goodell.

the nfl was perfect the way it was before u came in, why not just add 10 teams to playoffs in each conference while your at it.

lets reward mediocrity even more

As a fan of a team that hasn't made the playoffs but once in like 12 years, are you seriously going to complain about the NFL expanding the playoffs?

I'm not in favor of dumbing down the playoffs, but it is preferable to a 18 game season. I would add a second bye to extend the season (more money) and give players an extra break to rest and recover.

it's so stupid, there is not a good reason to add another playoff team.

There is a good reason and that is the NFL wants more money. But yeah there is nothing wrong with the way its set up now. I wouldn't mind it so much if they went to a 18 game schedule but I don't want teams making the playoffs at 7-9 or even 8-8. The Dolphins or the Ravens or the Steelers did not deserve to be in the playoffs.

Ireland should be **** canned this year and getting into the postseason simply due to a change on a piece of paper shouldn't change that.

Oh, agreed. I think that's a fantastic idea and I have no idea why they haven't already done that.

Think about it... you can play the same amount of games, but have one more week of televised games on Sunday/Monday night. They only show three games on Sunday afternoon regardless of how many are being played. That's five or six more games on TV in every market, if you count those dumb Thursday night games.

Oh, and end the 'exclusive doubleheader' for FOX/CBS. Allow both networks to show a doubleheader every week. I bet they can work that into the TV contracts and that will create more advertising revenue.

Raiders fans are probably hoping they expand it to the top 24 teams get in...

Horrible decision. The NFL Playoff format is the best of any league. Just the right amount of teams make it before bad teams get in like NBA. Why not have 10 teams make it from each conference? How about everyone makes it and gets a pizza party so there are no losers!

Lewis can build a defense, but he can’t build a quarterback. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has a well-earned reputation as a great defensive mind, and his defense was strong on Sunday, holding a good San Diego offense in check for most of the game. Unfortunately, Lewis has Andy Dalton as his quarterback, and Dalton was beyond terrible on Sunday, with three turnovers that pretty much handed the game to the Chargers. Lewis may need to sign or draft another quarterback this offseason because Dalton simply isn’t up to the task.

Its a crazy dynamic where Dalton can be more on the hotseat than QBs like Tannehill, or even guys like Cutler and Romo. Dalton is at least giving them chances and there is no reason think they won't have another chance next season. Sure he's inconsistent as all hell but how in the **** is Cutler getting a 7 year extension while the Bengals may be looking for a replacement, they are the same ****ing QB!!

And as far as I'm concerned that Jets game should be looked at as a playoff game for Tannehill.

I actually would be cool with adding 1 playoff team. Sure theres the risk of an average team getting in, but we're talking about the difference between the 6th seed and the NEXT best team. As long as its only 1 per conference, I like it.

Can an 8-8 team get in? Yes. But that could happen with 6 teams in each conf as it stands now. I think more importantly it rewards teams that don't make it (current format) who win 9+ games, which to me is a good season. 10 wins and not making it is brutal.

just put everybody in... be like Pop Warner. have a playoff section, and an invitational section.. be sure and give every team a trophy, and tell them "how good and how special" they all are.

I dont want a 7th team in the playoffs. I think it will dilute the talent. I don't want 7-9 teams playing for a championship with 13-3 teams. It will make more money for the NFL, but it will also weaken the product. No thanks.

The participation award is cool. Now we just need the purple marker.

I want to get rid of divisions. All teams in the AFC play all teams in the AFC once. You then play one team in the NFC that finished in the same place in the conference as you last year. You then seed the teams at the end of the season from 1-6 (or 7) according to their record.
