Report: Pats to franchise Cassel

I dunno. We know (if he can get back to form) Brady is a particularly good QB but still don't know if Cassel is as good as playing with the players he does, in the system he does, makes him look. That's not a slight on Cassel. A QB still has to take advantage of the players he has and be able to work the system he plays in. All I'm saying is that having Moss to throw to won't hurt any QB's stats.

If they do franchise Cassel and keep Brady, that could be good as it would tie up a lot of salary cap space. They'll probably find a way round it though. With the possibility of an uncapped 2010, they may be able to keep both, backload the contracts and still have enough cap room to work with in 2009. Damn them!

Not surprising. Brady is no gurantee to be fully healthy by the start of the 2009 season, and Cassel is not going to be foolish and turn down the possible $14 million guranteed that comes with that tag.

I don't know, I think Matt Cassel will be exposed next season if he gets the starting nod over Tom Brady.

Cassel has performed well against weak competition all season, and the Patriots were projected in the preseason to have the league's easiest schedule.

Cassel could easily be another one-year wonder like Derek Anderson in Cleveland.

i was thinking the exact same thing

What position is the Niners' #1 pick?

I think its 10, I have a feeling he will either end up in SF (hes from California and went to USC) or the Vikings, depending on how good Tavaris Jackson plays in the playoffs

I really dont see where trading him is an option. Who is going to give away a trade pick plus garuntee him 14 mil a year. I think it is going to be difficult for them to keep both Brady and Cassel. Cassel is going to insist on the satarting role. I dont think money is going to be as much the issue for him as playing time. He is going to be offered at least 6 million a year on the free agency market.

NE might be able to sign him to a 1yr deal at 8 million to get him stay while Brady heals but thats about it, if they are indeed going to stick with Brady over the long term.

I would not put alot of creedence into a PFW report. They jump the gun on their reports are often wrong. They like to sensationalize reports to entice people to read articles.

Other players have been franchised to get value for him. I'm not so sure it'll cost a 1st rd pick. Teams don't have balls and would rather risk it on a college Qb than somebody whose been in the league a few years. It also depends on who comes out. I think Stafford is coming out but if Bradford doesn't the dropoff is significant.

I agree that the availability of QB against the the amount of teams looking will be a factor in this. I also think a team would be much more likely to make a trade for Brady then they would Cassel if Brady can pass a team physical. Cassel has proven he can run the Patriots offense but I think its fair to say that he is an unproven risk to run someone elses offense. It is this reason that I do not believe teams will open their purse strings to the tune of 12-14 million, plus a first day draft pick to get him.

If Brady looks healthy and like he is going to return to his form of old. I think Cassel if fine to run the Patriots and you get what you can for Brady. Brady comes at a fairly cheap price tag on the money side of things and they could make him look very attractive to a potential suitor. I dont have the figures in front of me but if memory serves me right I think he only is due to collect 4million next season.

I think dangling Brady in front of a team like the bears for their 1st and 3rd rnd picks could be a very tempting offer that they might bite on. It would bring them in a sorely needed QB and probably get them into the playoffs next season. It would not break the bank doing it. It would give the Patriots some sorely needed draft picks and move Brady out of their division. I think if they do trade him, they need to move him to the NFC and eliminate the possibility of him getting revenge on them in the playoffs.

One of them will be gone before the start of training camp. No team can afford to tie up $26 million at a single position.

I agree....sucks for the Pats as far as how it affects their salary cap....but the Pats have no idea if Brady will ever be like he once was so they may have to carry both guys for a year. You watch the Pats trade Cassell for a couple first rounders.....they always dupe somebody. :rolleyes2:
