On the front page of FinHeaven and on the Sun-Sentinel, it states that Shirdonya Mitchell was placed on injured reserve and will be out for the year. But yet the team website states that he was put on the Reserve/Non-football injury list. According to nfl.com, there is a distinct difference. The Reserve/NFI list is much like the PUP list in that the player is eligible to return after week 6. Anyway, his situation is much like Will Poole's and I just thought I would bring out the contradictory statements.

will poole's a better player and worth trying to get on the field.

I don't know much about Shirdonya, although I do remember a lot of hype about him prior to the draft (and during his workout day before his injury). But, his injury was actually before Poole's (I assume). So, if we expect Poole to be ready before the end of the year, you could almost put the same assumption on Shirdonya as well.

Mitchell got hurt at his pro day in march

I knew it was at his pro day, but I couldn't remember when it was. So, if that's true and he had his surgery soon after ... that does put him ahead of Poole's schedule. Obviously there are other factors (extent of the injury, how fast they heal, how well they rehab, etc.), but I just found it interesting.

Extent of the injury is really important here. Not all ACL tears are the same, for example. So as far as who sustained the injury first is not too relevant. The recovery's timeline is very individualized.

Mitchell tore the anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee trying to cut in a cone drill. I doubt he comes back from that this year.

On I.R. a player is paid. For a non-football injury list the team does not have to pay his salary. On either list a player does not receive a credited season.

On I.R. a player is done for the season but I think they can come back from the non-football list.

Merman, good points..I believe the player can come back from the PUP list after 6 weeks..The team then has 3 weeks to activate him or place him on IR/injury settlement and cut...

Even if Poole returns this year, I wouldn't expect major things from him. New system, fresh off of an injury.

Thanks. I agree with the PUP list rules but the Non-football Injury list activation rules seem to be different. David Bowens was put on the RNI list in 2003 and a Dolphins Press Release from that year had him reactivated Nov. 25th.

Nine weeks into the 2003 season would have been about 11/08/03.

09-04-2003, 2003 Season Kickoff
Kickoff event and game. New York Jets at Washington Redskins.

There does seem to be a cutoff date for the RNI list per another Dolphin Press Release. See the second quote. What a PIA not to have the roster rules.

David Bowens And Charlie Rogers Added To Active Roster; Sam Simmons And J.R. Tolver Placed On I/R
November 25, 2003 MiamiDolphins.com

The Miami Dolphins today placed wide receiver Sam Simmons on injured reserve with a left ankle injury. In addition, rookie wide receiver J.R. Tolver was placed on injured reserve with a right knee injury. The Dolphins filled the vacant roster spots by activating defensive end David Bowens off the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list and re-signing kick returner Charlie Rogers to a one-year contract.

The 6-3, 260-pound Bowens was placed on the Active/NFI list on July 24 before being moved to the Reserve/NFI list on August 26. In 2002, Bowens played in 14 games for the Dolphins, registering 20 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He added 12 tackles on special teams as well.

Dolphins Place Mark Dixon On I/R; David Bowens Returns To Practice
November 4, 2003 Dolphins Press Release

The Miami Dolphins today placed offensive tackle Mark Dixon on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Dixon, who had been inactive for each of the first eight games of 2003, is not eligible to return this season.

Also on Tuesday, the club announced that defensive end David Bowens, currently on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List, will return to practice. He must be activated to the 53-man roster by Tuesday, November 25 at 4:00 p.m. (ET), or remain on the NFI list for the remainder of the 2003 season.

I believe the same rules apply for the PUP and NFI list. They are ... a player can be activated anywhere between week 6 and week 9, but they must pass a team administered physical to be re-activated. After week 9, if the player is not re-activated, then he must be placed on IR, waived, cut, etc. I found this on nfl.com when talking about Willis McGahee for his first year (don't have a link, sorry).

My whole point of creating the thread though is that the news sources differed in what they stated for Mitchell. The Herald posted it this morning that he was on the NFI list. So, I would assume now that Mitchell is on the NFI and he can be activated between week 6 and week 9 (as can Poole) if he's in good enough health.

The only reason I posted all that was to show that there are differences between the PUP and NFI lists. The PUP rules are, as you stated, they were the same in 2003 too.

The sixth week of of the 2003 season was 10/17/03. BTW those press releases are from the Official Dolphins site and you can still go there and view them, as they are listed in the archives per date.

Also you should go with the Dolphins Offiicial site for information, as the press gets its information from there too. It is usually the press that makes the mistakes in information while copying.

Maybe I should have mentioned that the Nov. 4th press release had Dixon put on I.R. for the season. That was the ninth week of the 2003 season, which was the last week to activate players from the PUP list.

The team had until 11/25/03 to activate David Bowens from the NFI list, which was the 12th week of the season. Three weeks more.

Yeah, I figured the Sun-Sentinel was wrong. I generally lean towards the official site, but the contradictions just made me wonder.

Sorry, I didn't get from your post that the PUP and NFI lists were different. Are you saying that they are?
