I do not understand why FA is before the draft. It makes no sense.

In the draft, you don't know who you can get, who may fall to you, and what position of need you can fill. In FA, you can pick and choose who you want.

Would it not be much better draft first, and then fill in what you need?

Thoughts?

That's what force's teams to trade for fear of not getting the player they want which in turn adds alittle excitment to the offseason. It would drive up the FA price tag's if they know there's three teams that need player "A" and the draft is done then his agent drives the price through the roof. If in our present situation player "A" has interest from three teams all three can choose to wait for the draft if the asking price is too high.

I have thought this many times.

Yeah, for example we wanted a big physical center, and they were there in the draft. No reason to consider because we signed Grove for 10 times what they would have cost.

I disagree. I do nt see FA's getting more after the draft, most would get less.

I am not sure how much difference it might make. Holiday is still a good player and has not been picked up yet for example. Not all the teams have all their holes filled yet .
I just so not think it makes that much difference as there are kinds of free agency senarios going on even after the draft. Guys like Holiday will get picked up during the year as stopgaps as well teams being able to raid each other practice squads.
In terms of free agency I would really like to see it go away the draft go back to 10-12 rounds and each team have squads of 60 plus players. Just the opposite is about to happen I know with the players union and FA. I do not know what it is going to take to make the fans quit supporting this kind of stuff. Here I am still a fan after I swore I would quit watching the phins once Shula and Marinio retired.

I don't know if it would be better to have the draft first but it works both ways. If you have the draft before free agency, you are not guaranteed to draft the players you want and might have to overpay for a free agent because he knows you have a need for him will pay him handsomely for his services.

It also depends on a team's philosophy regarding the draft and free agency. Some teams believe in building through the draft and are not very active in free agency whereas others don't seem to value player development as much.

Would you leave the draft where it is in April or would you move it to an earlier time and how soon after the draft would you have free agency begins?

Dont think it makes that much of a difference.

If anything it would be worse, as if the draft was earlier that would mean a longer period of boredom. At least with the draft in April, you have something to look forward too in April. If the draft took place in late Febuary, it would be an awfully long time till August.

do you really think that getting players is as easy as in madden ? just shovel some money, if he doesn't bite you show him some more ?

those guys have plenty of decisions to make before picking a team, it's actually more hard to sign a FA if you ask me...

1- money
2- quality of the team
3- stability in the coaching staff
4- city (playing in buffalo ? yuk...)
5- family
6- possibility of starting

etc.

Totally wrong IMO. Here is the problem. You draft AFTER free agency so that you know what you need to pick in the draft. If you wait until after, you would be stuck when someone you didn't expect to leave all of a sudden is lost. The FA's would have teams by the balls worse than they do now.

With the current system, if you lose an FA, you just replace them in the draft. If you had to replace them after, the FAs could freely extort teams for who knows how much...you would end up with teams destroying their salary caps on just one or two players while the rest get screwed...

BAD IDEA....

I agree with this.

Drafting Free Agents makes no sense to me, drafting players means bringing in young men who will become the cornerstone of your organization for hopefully years to come. A free agent draft would just mean a pool of over the hill players who you might get a few years out of, and thats just in a good FA class. This years FA class was pretty lack luster, most are.

Exactly! If a team is drafting for needs then it can also be to their advantage to have FA before the draft so they can fill some needs first and then focus on other remaining positions of need in the draft. You never know who you're going to end up with in the draft but you never know which FA's you're going to be able to sign either so it works both ways.
