Reviewing the drafts 2005 - 2010 - It is depressing

Those barren years definitely set us back awhile, but it's not like we've drafted all that well the entire past decade. Sure, the last few have been pretty decent, but from 99-07, they were all pretty bad, getting second rate parts to fix a first rate problem.

absolutely, havent had one single good draft since jimmy left. this year is the first one where the early picks will actually pan out (and not just pan out but may become excellent players) and some late draft picks show promise. THE VERY FIRST TIME. lets get rid of ireland tho

dont get too high on the players we drafted late just yet.... everyone was loving nolan carrol and reshad jones last year and now they want them gone...

Just wanted to add my two cents.... I do know what it is like to miss on draft picks....

BUT you also have to put alot of the blame on coaching. Look at the Bills they have an offense that is one of the tops in the league with a whopping one 1dt round draft pick on the Offense. Their Three biggest playmakers are a 7th round QB, 7th Round WR and Undrafted FA RB.

yes their are misses in the draft, but you have to put some fault on coaching staff for the lack of development of their players.... Now yes there are some that will never get it though.

What a long list of mistakes this franchise has made. I don't get the feeling this franchise has any idea of what type of team it wants to create and this really screws our draft picks up. Are we drafting based on needs or best player available? Also, haven't seen much about our scouts. Are they the ones misreading the talent coming out of college and thus leading our GM down the wrong road?

well there is a huge difference here. nolan carroll never did anything on the field so it was all "hype" rashad jones created a couple plays at the very end of last year. but his hype train was already rolling prior to that. i dont think there is any doubt Jones can make plays - but he better learn how to tackle, and he better learn what his job as a FS is. if he continues to blow assignments it will never matter "if" he can make plays.

there is a HUGE difference here. Pouncey and Thomas saw the field right away as rookies and theyve both produced. so these examples just arent even close. there is actually a REASON to be high on pouncey and thomas its not "hype" like the players u mentioned

NFL success rates show 2.3 starters per draft of 7. The first 2 rounds can make orbreak you and since these guys are the best college players their success rate should be around 44%
2005-Brown, Roth, Crowder
2006-Nobody
2007-Ginn did start although he was more a special teams guy, Satele, Solai, Fields
2008-Long, Merling, Henne
2009-Davis, Smith, Hartline, Clemmons
2010-Misi, Odrick-missed due to injury, Jerry

These are all guys that have "started" for us, so by those definitions other than 2006 we weren't awful. Problem is the quality of these players that have "started" hasn't been very good. Other than Long, Merling, Davis and Brown none of these other guys have given us anything special IMO.
Viewed from that perspective our drafts have been bad, thus we are where we are, at the bottom of the NFL.

for the 2010 draft, i like Odrick, and so far Misi starts, Carroll has started, Jones starts, Spitler is core special teams, Jerry comes in for Vernon when Vernon stubs a toe. I'm not saying any of them are great players, but that is a lot more production than your summation would indicate.

and let's review ireland's first draft in charge as well:

Mike Pouncey
Daniel Thomas
Clyde Gates
Charles Clay
Frank Kearse
Jimmy Wilson

looks about 83.333% successful at this point.

I see two successful players judging by what they've done to this point. That not a fair way to judge them? Then now you understand why the OP didn't include them.

You're right, but he was addressing those counting guys besides Pouncey and Thomas.

This year's draft is actually decent as some other have said. Aside from Pouncey and Thomas who are already contributing, I think Gates can still become a good player. It takes a few years sometimes for WR to catch up to NFL speed. And Id like to see how he is with a good qb throwing him the ball.

Did Ronnie even suit up today? If you watched the game tonight, Ryan didn't look bad, but again underscored, by head to head comparison, if there was ever a draft we could take a mulligan on, it would have to be the 05 much more so than 08!

All those bad drafts ... AT THE TIME ... were like today's drafts. People starting, rave reviews, blah-blah, yadda-yadda.

A couple years later reality sets in. And to boot ... all those draft rejects can't even stick on a thin-talent-roster which we've had for a decade = Stinky poo!!

We all hope this years picks pan out ... but they have little NFL competition!! ... after all, we're in the Luck Sweepstakes!! LOL Beaucoup Stinky poo R' Us.

gotcha. thank u. so lets address the other guys. because theyve already shown more early on than carroll or jones did. frank kearse was claimed by another team because sparano decided he wasnt good enough to keep. jimmy wilson has really flashed (IMO) shows some ball skills, and toughness (2 things carroll hasnt - u see that deer in the headlights look on opening night??). clay produced this week when he was in the game.

too early to say on the late round picks in this draft, but i can honestly say the guy im least impressed with is Gates. and i dont blame ireland for taking him given the lack of speed on this roster, hes just gonna take a lot of time to develop and personally i dont think he will. to me its common sense that you have to run your routes and position (and use) your body downfield in order to give your quarterback a window to throw the ball into. this guy has to be wide open to get the ball at this point in his career. ted ginn is a better receiver at this point than clyde gates (and always was).

the later picks in this draft class have shown more promise than the other guys mentioned. the truth is none of us know EXACTLY who is responsible for what but over time a couple things seem pretty clear.

1. parcells controlled personal decisions up through last years draft
2. pat white was parcells pick
3. jake long WAS parcells pick (he explained why NOT matt ryan - chad henne WAS CHEAPER - by parcell's OWN WORDS - shows you how much he valued the QB position)
4. john jerry was a sparano pick
5. bill parcells did NOT want DEMARCUS WARE. he wanted marcus spears. Ware has become perhaps the best pass rusher in the NFL. Ireland lobbied for the pick.
6. this years draft was jeff irelands draft and its the best one weve had since jimmy johnson. EVEN considering that it should be too soon to evaluate. even considering that ireland might have been somewhat handcuffed by the pressure for this draft to show immediate dividends (because if it didnt show immediate results both he and the coach could be on their way out - this means a guy like mallett, didnt have the priority he might have ordinarily)

it seems if you look objectively, with what we actually know about ireland and weed out the garbage - he MAY actually be a very good judge of talent. he also has NOTHING to do with player development and WHO PLAYS. lets look at 2 FACTS (guess i came up w 4 - sorry). cameron wake BARELY saw the field his first year EVEN THO to everybody but sparano he was the teams best pass rusher. ted ginn wasnt our return man sparanos first year - even tho he was already proven by his rookie campaign and we havent had a viable return man in ages. reggie bush continues to be misused and doesnt and not used in the return game. marc columbo continues to start at right guard even tho we have a better one in nate garner on the roster. perhaps sparano has no clue how to develop talent and where to position that talent. just a thought

i think Parcells viewed Ryan and Henne as equals, so he took the franchise LT and saved a bunch of money on Henne. and, that was the right move: Henne is a better QB than Ryan.

You forgot the undrafted players like Davone Bess, Cam Wake & Dan Carpenter.

Also, Brandon Fields is still on the team.
