Practice Squad
First off, I am getting all of my information from The Sporting News Magazine from the start of the 2007 season. This is one of the reasons I like to keep these type of Football magazines.
Justin Smiley- Is listed as a Solid starting RG; on the rating scale with Fringe, Adequate, Solid, and Elite. It states, Smiley is perhaps the team's most athletic lineman. His strength and mobility make him a forceful blocker when he's leading a sweep or pulling on a trap or counter play.
Strengths- Aggressive coming off the ball and has good pop and an exellent first step. Has good quickness, works hard and does a nice job pulling. Has good athletic ability, can get to second level and uses his hands well.
Weakness- Lacks the strength to move the pile, plays with a narrow base and has difficulty maintaining blocks. Sometimes is beaten by good inside moves and must work on his balance.
Bottom Line- Smiley has improved his technique and strength and now is a valuable starter.
Overall grade- 7.8 (out of 9.9)
Reggie Torbor- The only information they say about him is..."He will battle with DeOssie to be the backup on the strong side... Torbor is a linebacker/end 'tweener and could benefit from the change in system."
Randy Starks- Is listed as a Adequate Right Defensive Tackle. "Randy Starks has been inconsistant, but he played better last season and has improved at recognizing plays and reacting.
Strengths- Versatile, with a nice combination of size, athleticism and strength. Explosive and comes off the ball low and hard. Has good lowerbody strength at the point of attack. Good at shedding blocks inside.
Weakness- Needs to improve stamina and use his hands better to protect his lower legs. Sometimes will spin off blocks and get out of position.
Bottom Line- Starks has the ability to take over a game when he's fresh, but he has been disappointing overall. He must show better commitment to reach the next level.
Overall Grade- 7.7
Ernest Wilford- Is listed as an adequate starting WR. Wilford is a big target. He is a possession reciever who excels at outjumping defenders.
Strengths- Outstanding size makes him a solid red zone target and possession reciever. Good in traffic and over the middle. Simply overpowers on jump balls. Breaks Tackles.
Weakness- Not a quick-twitch player. Lacks deep speed. Has below average flexibility and rounds off his routes.
Bottom Line- Wilford plays with power, toughness and effort. He gets open by using his strength. Though he isn't a game-changing reciever, Wilford is a solid contributor.
Overall Grade- 6.9
Josh McCown- Unfortunately with JaMarcus Russel, and Andrew Walter on the team he is not talked about a lot. Here is what they say about him, "McCown could begin the season as the starter.... McCown compensates for his lack of arm strength by being accurate and smart with the ball...He is not the savior but he could by Russel a little time so that they don't have to throw him right into the fire."
Sean Ryan- Is listed as a Adequate (but back-up) Tight end. He is backing up Chris Baker on the Projected Depth Chart. That is the only information provided about him.
David Kircus- There is no information about him. They have him listed on the Denver Broncos' roster, but that is the only place he is mentioned.
Jason Ferguson- Is listed as a Solid starting defensive Nose Tackle in the 3-4. At nose tackle he is a run stuffer. He is the key to the Cowboy's 3-4.
Strengths- Immovable once he has established position. Occupies blockers at the line of scrimmage; ability to anchor against double-teams helps free up other defenders. Has the upper-body strength to maintain seperation. A powerful bull rusher who can collapse the pocket. Plays under control in space and makes open-field tackles.
Weakness- Lacks the quickness to consistantly shoot inside. Loses balance when forced to change direction quickly. Lacks instincts. Wears down.
Bottom Line- Conditioning always will be critical, but Ferguson is solid against the run and helps make Dallas' 3-4 defence go.
Overall grade- 7.8
