I know its early but after watching our new lineman I can't help but to compare him to the last time we took a LT with a high pick. I'm aware that the regular season hasn't even strated yet, but first impressions carry weight with me and mine finds Jake struggling with his footwork. That's something that he may not be able to "iron out after a few games". For those of you who don't remember Webb was lockdown from from Day 1.

so arguably the best LT in Miami Dolphins history that is a member of the Ring of Honor for Miami, a member of the All-Decade team for the 90's, and probably deserves to have his number retired (I can't be the only one that was a bit bothered that a UDFA we just signed got Webb's number) is better than a rookie who has yet to play in a regular season game but has looked fairly decent in preseason?

just making sure I've got that clear.

Well agree agree Webb had awesome footwork, not only that but he had perfect pass blocking Form. Always had his arm's out stretched, just a beautiful thing to watch him pass block.

But Jake Long is a better run blocker right now than Webb was in his prime.

Also Webb was the 1st ever OT to be selected to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season.

Jake might stuggle a little bit with his footwork, but the kid was awesome throughout the pre-season. Last night sack was on Smiley and I think Henne held on to that ball a little bit to long. Long has not given up a sack and has been awesome with the Run Block. The only two negative were on a run play when he tried moving inside and the defender rushed out and a false start. The kid is gonna be solid and will be there for a very Long time.

1 point is that Richmond Webb did not face the kind of talent on the defensive line like there is today. The speed of the game is probably 3 times or more faster. D lineman running 4.4 forty's and very strong as well. I also think at this point Richmond was better, at pass pro, but not even in the same league in run blocking. Webb was a great player for us. Long will have that same impact, but IMO it will take Long a few years to become the stud pass protector we want him to be. And that's fine, we want to see development. The reason he was selected was for all his intangibles, strength, but mainly for his dominant run blocking skills because that's the type of offense this will be. Once he becomes a great Pass protector we have an all time great on our hands.

I agree. Our offense was centered around one of the (if not THE) best QBs of all time. Webb surprised everyone with how good he was when everyone thought he would struggle, much like Joe Thomas last year. But our offense is essentially a run first, so, truthfully, pass blocking isn't quite as essential for our team right now and he will develop it over time. On a side note, I read an article a while back that said that Webb wanted to talk to Jake and help him. I wonder if that ever actually happened.

yeah, you do, but also that same rookie who has played "fairly decent" was the number 1 overall draft pick who will make more in year one than your hero did in his entire first contract. He needs to be dominant to justify hhis investment.

Jeno James had it for 3 years......kinda softened the blow, no?

Webb was a pass blocker and sucked in run blocking. Moreover, Marino's ultra-quick release made Webb look better than he really was. Not taking anything away from the guy - BUT it is apples and oranges.

Jake needs to:

a - get used to the speed of the game

b - learn not to commit too early

c - stop leaning(which worked in college but not in the show)

he is never gonna be a great pass blocker, but in 2 years I think he will be a very good run blocker and an average pass blocker

Richmond never had a Ricky Williams to make his run blocking look better either. To say Richmond Webb was a bad run blocker is ignorant and biased and saying he played against lesser talent is the most retardedest **** I ever heard. Jake is the highest paid LT in NFL history and his supposed strong points (ignorant mental errors) is his weakness right now. Don't ever compare someones pay to one of our greatest players ever please.

He needs to be dominant when?

In his first 4 preseason games as a rookie?

Come back in 2-3 years, and then ask the question.

After all, if Long struggles in his rookie season, or even in his first few seasons, but then becomes a perennial Pro Bowler for 5-10 years after that, I'm fairly sure that nobody is going to complain about the selection.

I agree. When you consider the LT's that started for us since Webb retired, really I think Carey did the best job of that bunch, but even he is better suited for RT. Long is the best prospect and player manning that side of the line since Webb, and with focus on a power running attack this season Long may arguably be a better fit for the offense than a superior pass protector like Webb. Overall though I think it's a bit premature to start comparing Long to Webb so early in his career. Either way, I'm excited to see Long this year and I bet we'll be seeing Big Jake making a couple trips to Hawaii throughout the course of his career:woot:

Alright alright, Long's already a bust before he plays in 1 real game. Blah blah blah, yeah yeah yeah
