Rick Venturi to be added to the DEF coaching staff?

His resume doesnt exactly thrill me.

DC of the SAINTS?

Yuck. I hope its as a position coach, or quality control.. and not to replace Muschamp and Smith or even Capers as DC.

Venturi actually started out as the secondary coach in Cleveland while Nick and Bill were there, and he took over the defensive coordinator job that Saban vacated when he took the Michigan State job. There has been some talk that Mel Phillips is looking to retire, so they may be looking at Venturi to replace Phillips as the secondary coach.

I highly doubt it would be for the DC position. I could be wrong, but i'd be shocked to see that. I actually feel that Capers is doing the same thing as Mularkey. He's getting feelers in for HC positions and getting financial information and then will make his decision from there. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mularkey and Capers as the OC and DC by month's end..

I read in an article a few weeks ago (in the Herald I think) where Phillips denied those reports and said he would not retire. Maybe Venturi as an extra secondary coach (nickel package coach, safeties), to allow Muschamp to work more with the overall D as coordinator.

With Saban looking to hire Dom Capers as well, it seems like he wants to surround himself with more experienced defenisve minds, consultants, etc. Id love to hear his reasoning for hiring wanting to hire such obviously-qualified coaches for bit-roles in his defensive landscape. Saban fascinates me that way. :)

Also though... he has someone ready to step up if one of our guys gets a HC position somewhere...

being from north florida and getting all the saint telecasts, i can tell you venturi has been with the saints, various defensive coaching positions, since the final year(s) of the jim mora era. ditka retained him, as did haslett. venturi, if you hear him speak (interview), he comes across as bright, intelligent, knows what he's talking about, etc. however, for whatever reason, especially the last few years as the saints dc, his defensive teams have underachieved, for whatever reason. especially when stopping the run. i like him as a person, but as a coach, questionable. i would'nt be concerned though, i'm quite sure coach saban knows his limits as well as anyone.

hey guys what trhe word on capers or venturi. If capers doesnt accept the job im for venturi. The rumor is that he had little talent to work with and he is a work feind like saban.

Im for either one..Preferrably capers, venturi second!

Venturi is plan B on defense IMO. Capers is dragging his feet so Saban may act tommorrow or soon on this. I think Capers does not see himself going back to DC somehow. The market will dictate that I guess. Saban wont wait forever. they have to plan and scheme, that is why I think Venturi would be nice pickup cus Saban knows him well like Capers.

you can blame Haslett for that. Haslett is not very good at all as HC. Once again, another coodinator who was never meant to be. Keep in mind Hurricane Katrina too. Bad season to keep in mind in the big picture scheme of things.

Rick Venturi has been on some brutal football teams nearly his whole career. He was with the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts from 1982 through 1993 and has been with the Saints since 1996. Those Colts teams were about as bad as it gets, especially defensively.

Between those two stints, he worked in Cleveland with Saban.

At least it doesn't seem as if Saban would name Venturi defensive coordinator. And it does seem that Venturi (Dick Jauron is another) who even though he may have been on some bad teams, he has a reputation as a good coach around the league. Will just have to trust Saban on this one.

I agree, I dont have any problem with venturi if capers doesnt accept the job.

Capers better leave his ego at the door. It doesnt look like too many teams are interested in him as HC. He blew it with the texans and also didnt do too well with the panthers (outside of the NFC championship once).

If he wants to get another crack at a HC job he might have to settle for a DC spot to bring the spotlight back to him.
