Ricky Williams is probably the most interesting and honest athlete I've EVER encountered. Truth is, he's a rare breed of human. One who is thoughtful, honest, and intriguing. But sometimes that honesty doesn't always benefit him, at least when it involves the sport of public perception.

One statement the Dolphins running back made on the Dan Patrick radio show really troubled me. I know Ricky Williams is playing football because of the money. He likes football, and likes competing. But he NEEDS the money, and HATES everything that comes with being an NFL player (outside of money). That's the realities of his situation.

If you could have seen him struggle to fit into the locker room last season you'd understand.
I honestly believe if Williams could go teach yoga, or be a personal trainer and make $750,000 a year doing it we'd never see, or hear from him again.

I don't ever remember hearing he had any problem 'fitting in' to the lockerroom. What were you there? Did YOU see him having problems fitting in?

If he does beat the demons great for us and him.

If he does not we are not coached by the same schlub (dave dumbstache) that got us here.

So if Ricky is gonna smoke ganja I hope he does it right and gets the good stuff.

I hope even more that he runs all over opposing defenses for years to come as a Dolphin and then gets the really really good stuff.

Me too, I actually heard the opposite, and the same is this year.. this year its reported Ricky is turning the crner of becoming a team leader and is accepting a more responsible role...

I take absolutely NO precedence in what is spewed in blogs

i don't think alot of you understand how hard it is to shake anxiety disorders like this.
i have a type of anxiety disorder and it can completely take control at any given moment.
i commend his efforts of getting help and being clean and as long as he has the fight in him to attempt to go against his wanted impulses i will be behind him every step of the way.

good luck ricky

I wish Ricky all the best regardless of how he produces on the field this season. Their is a reason that Parcells and co. wanted this guy on to come back and play for the Dolphins. When he's motivated you see him produce eye popping numbers and make jaw dropping plays because that's just what he does. There's no way to explain it as he is just naturally gifted when it comes to playing football and with him only getting paid the vet minimum there's not much invested in him. It can only benefit us because his upside is limitless. If he were to decide tommarow not to play football any longer it wouldn't be the crisis that it once was to fill his void. It would be just like releasing one of our backups in terms of money.

I really think Ricky is going to be big this year. Of course I am an optimist, so I try to think things will work out. I was shocked when he retired, one of those jaw dropping moments. I would be if he did again, however, if I saw he had tested positive again for marijuana, I would not be shocked. Any addiction is tough to beat. But, I admire him trying to turn things around, and hope we can all enjoy the ride.

Is it only me ---I swear when he talk's I hear the Outer Limit's intro.I believe he will be the head of a Cult after his playing day's.

what does "ricky doesn't trust ricky" mean, exactly? what doesn't he trust about himself?

i understand it's the headline or the SS story, but no where in the story does it indicate that Ricky says he doesn't trust himself... pretty poor, if you ask me...

this was as close as it got:

he basically told Dan Patrick he doesn't trust himself

No, he didn't tell Patrick that... That's you, writer, suggesting that.

I don't really see Ricky as the changed man everyone is clamoring about he still has the same anxiety problems and he still is talking about doing other things besides football. The media build him to be something he is not every year and the fans eat it up. The closer the season nears the more nervous ricky gets you can tell by his statements he starts talking about doing other things besides football and if you listen closley he says he is misunderstood by fans and media which IMO is basically a confession that he can't be that player everyone wants him to be. But as soon as the interview ends everyone goes back to their own views again assuming ricky has been reformed and loves the NFL.

Nobody can deny that Ricky played a huge role in starting the avalanche that led to a 1-15 season. Of course Wanny played a huge role, but this non stop Ricky saga will not be judged nicely 10 years from now. I love the guy as a person and think the NFL rules regarding marijuana are ridiculous, especially when you have guys that get away with brawling and domestic abuse, but Ricky has been at the center of what has been the worst 5 year period in Dolphin, and quite possibly NFL history for any team to endure.

While that all may be true, Ricky's retirement may have been a blessing in disguise. Granted, we haven't made much progress since that 4-12 season, where would we be if he hadn't been suspended/retired? We probably would have been the same 9-7 team that year. Wanny and Spielman probably would have been here for another year at least.

I don't know though. Maybe it wouldn't have made much difference. What have the past 3 years done for us that Wanny and Spielman couldn't? There are a couple OK players from Saban's years, but still nothing great (except Ronnie, but it's hard to mess up on a RB taken 2nd overall). And we still don;t know if we have a QB.

that's funny to see the sentence..." he NEEDS the money, but hates everything that goes along with being an NFL PLAYER"

WOW.....he needs money, but hates his job! I think he's one of the few in the world who feel this way!

true.

but it does stand out to have a professional athlete in that situation.
