I just read that Steve Smith and Teddy Bruschi tied for the comeback player of the year award. Of the 50 sports writers that vote, they recieved 18 each, followed by quarterback Mark Brunell with six; Tennessee defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch with five; Detroit receiver Roy Williams, Tampa Bay receiver Joey Galloway and Minnesota receiver-kick returner Koren Robinson, each with one vote.

There was talk that Ricky might be in consideration. I think he got overlooked. I am very OK with Bruschi winning. But the others just overcame basic injuries.

Ricky overcame a mental disorder, rehab off the wacky weed, and then had to work his way into good graces with the team and the league.

He exceled at it. He should have gotten a few votes IMO.

That deff. is pretty ridiculous... Bruschi will win... because Pats are gods... haha

I dont think he deserved consideration for the simple fact that he quit. It was self-imposed. Im glad he came back, but he shouldnt be rewarded for it.

The thing is, Ricky left on his own power.

ricky not winning isn't surprising...he left by choice...the other were either injured or just not good enough.

They probally took into consideration the player had to have come back from an injury, and not a one year break to smoke weed.

I'm surprised Steve Smith got more votes than Galloway or Williams. Bruschi's the winner yes, but Smith had an injury lots of other players have had and kind of tarnished himself with that ref-shoving incident. Does that mean Donovan McNabb gets it next year?

I disagree, mental illness is as real as any physical injury. I am not saying he should win, but he should have definitely drawn some consideration.

I tought bruschi played well last year

Come on. Is there an award for everything in this league. Talk about needless self congratulatory drivel -- "come back player". I understand the value of quantatative awards but the extent of this qualitative recognition is excess. These are professionals who make good money. They shouldn't need McDonald's level motivational tactics to feel appreciated -- and perhaps the players don't. It's the sportwriters who on a whole are little boys still starstruck with their heroes dreaming to be the jock they never were.

damn right

I would conjecture that with or without mental illness, his timing of leaving the team at the worst possible moment to screw his team was probably a factor. That was a calculated move not a sign of mental illness.

I think also that his other statements came into play. Remember how we were taking advantage of a guy with three kids by a lawsuit designed to get him to honor his contract. Then he said he would only play for a year or two if he ever did come back which devalued him further on the trade block if he came back.

Perhaps the voters of this award try to find someone who is both an honorable person and who makes a substantial contribution on the field.
