Toronto vs. Edmonton is on one of the channels I get that I never watch. I was channel surfing between college games when I realized Ricky Williams, John Avery, and Troy Davis were all playing in the game. As a Saints fan I of course am interested in both Ricky and Troy Davis (a third round pick by Ditkahead). Here's my question - Exactly how are Troy Davis and John Avery (both terrible NFL flops) "great" CFL backs and Ricky looks so ordinary? I really thought Ricky would set records in the CFL instead he looks worse than 5' 6" 185 lb. Troy Davis, why?

He's had several injuries including a broken arm and achilles heal. He hasn't set the CFL on fire but he's not a flop either (in terms of production) when he has been on the field. I'm kinda glad he hasn't racked up a ton of carries - we'd like to get him back with some tread left on his wheels. We've all seen what he can do in the NFL.

It's a totally different game, for one. Teams dont run in the CFL like they do in the NFL. It's a much more pass-oriented game, with running out of passing formations.

Well Avery is not a great back.

Williams is still finding his comfort factor but more than anything when Williams is on the field the other team is out there to only stop him. When Damon Allen was out this season his production dropped because no one played the pass at all.

He is probably still hurt and why go out all out for a one year thing when he already has a job in the NFL.

Avery is lousy in the CFL. He is still soft and fumbles too often.

Troy Davis is the classic example of a guy that is a little too small for the NFL but is a hell of a back, and fits in very well in the CFL. If he was a little bigger and a little faster Davis would be in the NFL, he is an NFL style back. In my opinion anyway.

Ricky is really coming around now. He is not a dominant player in the league, he wouldn't even be an all-star (with only 8 teams) but he is a contributer for one of the better teams in the league. If Ricky stayed in the CFL for a couple years and went to a team like Edmonton (more of an NFL attitude, Troy Davis is their back) then he would emerge as a star in the league.

Yeah, this is more or less true. Teams focus on Ricky more than any other player. he's a talent that's a cut above so he gets a disproportionate amount of attention. (he's also as "big" as most linemen, as I noticed the couple games I've seen him play live).

Ricky is also a big bruising back that needs momentum to really start breaking runs. The CFL is not tailored to that. You only get 2 shots and second down is almost 100% of the times a pass. So really, the guy gets the ball, perhaps 3 or 4 times a drive (assuming the drive lasts long). I'm not a fan of the CFL for a lot of reasons, but 3 downs is my biggest complaint. I can't stand watching an 8-yard run on first down, and 2 plays later, a punt, because some dude drops a ball on second down. One mistake a series and it's almost always ends in a punt. crap.
I just like watching ricky play for $40 bucks. I wear my #34 fins Jersey to the games.

The CFl does not suck!
Ricky is in a system that favors him running 10-15 per game. We all know he explodes after about 14 carries. look at his stats and please prove me wrong. Ricky will be back in Mecca soon enough

Ricky will be back in Mecca only if the NFL re-instates him, He doesn't come back automatically.

He has to come back to pay his debts,,,And the dolphins could use him,the NFL will more than likely allow him to play again.
