I had a "disagreement" at work with a fellow who said WIlliams was playing for the Vet minimum.

That much I agree with, my arguement was the vet minimum is different if you have played several years.

His claim is that's only in MLB not the NFL.

My reasoning is it increases by years in the league.

You only have one rookie year so if you were in your second season and signed by a team they have to pay you at least vet minimum, but if you were in your 10th season, your vet minimum would be higher than a 2nd year player.

Also, I pointed out Williams surely has incentives that would be reachable that would push his contract higher.

Miami, FL -- (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins have reportedly renewed the contact of troubled running back Ricky Williams for 2008.

Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, wrote an e-mail to The Miami Herald, saying Williams received a letter from Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells informing him of the decision.

Williams is scheduled to make $730,000 next season.

Anyone know what his incentives are?

UPDATE: I found the vet minimum scale and I was right.

The minimum salary structure for 2008 is as follows:
Years ...........................................Salary
Rookies and first-year players ...........$295,000
Second-year players .......................$370,000
Third-year .....................................$445,000
Fourth-year ...................................$520,000
Fifth- through seventh-year .............$605,000
Eighth- through tenth-year ..............$730,000
Eleventh-year and longer .................$830,000

I doubt that he has incentives, the Fins really own his ***.

This may be the last year of his deal though, and then he can retire or go be a free agent and not worry about the 8.2M.

At that point I can probably see the Dolphins signing him to a deal where he would be paid big money if he got the carries/yards/whatever, but wouldn't get squat if he flaked out again.

The thing is, Parcells really likes Ricky Williams.. I think Parcells understands him, unlike a lot of other people and previous coaches/management .. Parcells has pulled him over for private talks a few times and Ricky really REALLY respects Parcells and likes the guy.

I think it was yesterday when Williams mentioned that he likes Parcells because " he seems to really care".. Ricky likes genuineness and to him Parcells is the real deal...... I think Ricky would welcome a return (or an extention of a contract) because he just flat out likes the management here now, finally, and he respects Parcells a great deal... And besides, finally building up a good young offensive line who can run block is also appealing to Williams, and appealing to the rest of his career.

I think Ricky will still be playing here next year and beyond.

His pot problems not withstanding, the real reason he quit before was Wanny. Wanny really abused his running backs and after he blew up the O-line his last year here, Ricky wanted a new deal with alot of upfront money or else he wasn't going to play.....because he knew Wanny would be shortening his career big time. (Remember what he did to Lamar Smith in that playoff game against the Colts? Smith couldn't walk the next day)

So I think he'll still be around but he won't be getting any money upfront, he'll get paid for performance after the fact.

Agreed  But it was the Colts, not Jets.

IMO he will have a good season and I think we must sign him to extension now, or he will go to a super team (ala patsie) to get a ring.

i said this a while ago,and got hit pretty hard becouse of it.but i knew this was going to happen, and they need to sign him.ricky is going to run wild this year.ronnie is just not ready, maybe not even close to running like he did last year.ronnie just needs some time, something people just dont like to give.

I'm not so quick to forgive and forget when it comes to Ricky Williams. We're talking about one of the biggest busts of all-time here, a sure fire Hall of Famer who walked out at the top of his game, throwing his career away for drugs. While the bandwagon fans who HATED him for this, welcomed him back with open arms each time he's let us down since.

And now he is TEARING UP more than any other player on our team so far. You better get used to him.

And that's fine, i hope he does come back and play very well because he owes this organization and these fans A LOT. But get off Ricky Williams a little bit, he looked very good in his first pre-season game, there are still nineteen more games to go until the season is over.

you don't sign 31 year old rbs in the nfl who on top of the age factor you never know when he'll decide to quit the game to long term extensions.

that's called bad cap management. make ricky earn his keep. he owes this franchise for his past still.

Not likely. The guy is one bong hit away from a 1YR+ suspension, and he's a running back on the wrong side of 30.

If anyone signs him, including us, it'll be to an incentive laden deal where he gets paid after the fact. NOBODY in the league is going to give him more than the minimum salary upfront.

He's too much of a flake risk

I swear to god....So much love for a drug addict/quitter I have never seen. His production sionce 2003 has been.......Blistering, to say the least but, the Rick lovers are not discouraged. I think most Lynne williams lovers smoke alot of the same grass.

And having other good RBs so he dosent have to carry it 30 times a game. And getting a good QB like Henne so that he dosent have to carry the entire offense. A management and coach that understands, you know......BALANCE!
