Ricky Williams sheds light on retirement

http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/9083/ricky-williams-revists-retirement

ricky williams says he retired because of dave wannstedte, and his decision to hire an offensive coordinator who had no experience. Im glad ricky is back though and i hope he plays two or three more years if he has that left.
For sure they gave him one heck of a workload and he likely would have had his career shortened as any player would start to break down with that workload. However, I do wonder if those insights came to him as he was smoking a bowl. :ponder:

Thanks for sharing, I have never blamed the guy for leaving. I could not imagine how my body would feel every week after being pounded 40 times a game having to run the rock week in and week out.

Thanks for sharing, I always wondered what the deal was. When he did that it shocked the sh*t outta me I was so pissed at him for the longest time. At the time it just seemed like he was walking out on the team.

Any running back that enjoyed playing football would have loved to get the ball as much as ricky used to. But i still dont blame him, and another thing... LEGALIZE MARIJUANA! Though, i wont talk about the reasons why it needs to be legalized because that would last forever. Just do it!

No.

Lack of care, attentiveness, responsiveness, its a psychological crutch, causes "burnouts", is addictive, can cause lung damage, shrinks the hippocampus and brain function.

It's kind of sad that nearly every thread about RW STILL has to, in some way, reference MJ or degenerate into a discussion about MJ. It's not really that funny anymore and if Ricky's moved on, why can't we? He obviously wants to be understood as more than just an athlete or more than just a pot-smoking wayward athlete. If he's moved on, at the very least his fans should be able to - it's what he'd want from his "fans".

That being said, whether it gets legalized or not, it really CANNOT be a schedule I drug any longer. That in of itself is f'n criminal.

And it turns out he was right, they had no idea what they were doing. If Ricky stayed in 2004, we maybe would have won 6 or 7 games. The team would have slowly regressed instead of coming back strong with a new system in 2005 and being respectable again. Though Saban bailed so that didn't last, but thankfully we were saved quickly yet again!

Dave Wannstedt is easily the worst coach I've ever seen. Even this year when Pitt collapsed against Cincinatti in what boiled down to be the Big East championship game, you could see it coming from a mile away. It had all the telltale signs of a signature Wannstasche collapse. He's a failure and always will be a loser.

He loved football until Wanny. He had no problem when he played at Texas, he had his demons with the Saints with his depression and then he seemed to be renewed when he came to Miami, but when you are taking a pounding for a team that is falling apart from the inside knowing that you have told them you can not run the ball that much because of injury. How much fun would you be having???

"Williams was weary and wary. He had banked a pair of seasons in which he led the NFL with 775 rushing attempts, and the Dolphins were facing uncertainty at offensive coordinator."

I can only accept this truth for part of the reason. Something so drastic was not caused by one thing. I am sure his love for the ganja played a major role in this choice. I do like blaming Dave for it, as I hate Dave, and hated him the entire time he was here, and his mustache.

It did break my heart that Ricky left, but I think he redeemed him self as much as he could. His attitude and devotion when he did come back was a perfect storm to make this awkward situation work.
