I know I am no RealDriscoll on this site, and that I may not be as well known as some others who post threads like this, therefore, my analysis may mean nothing to you. But, just for the hell of it, I am going to provide you with my opinion of the Miami Dolphins from QB-Punter. Let's start with QB.
Quarterback
- Arguably the best thing about the 2009 season is we found out what we had in Chad Henne. Coming into the season, many thought he may not be all that he was cracked up to be, me being one of those people. Well, after this season, I'm fairly sure most all of us know who our QB for the next decade may be. I know it's been only 1 season, but how can you not love how well Chad Henne performed when thrown in there after Pennington went down? He showed poise, leadership, a rocket arm, and got more accurate as the season went on. He still needs to work on his decision making and pocket awareness, but other than that he has been incredible for a first year starter.
- The 44th overall pick in the draft, Pat White. We really didn't see much out of him this season. I think after Henne's performance this year, it's pretty clear that White will never be a starting QB for the Miami Dolphins. In my opinion, he was brought in to challenge Henne, and after that to be a wild card. Team's still don't know how we plan to use Pat White. Hell, even fans don't. At some point next year though, I expect him to make some big plays for us. Whether it be at QB, HB, WR, KR, PR, I don't know. Obviously if he plays anything but QB he's doing to have to bulk up a good 20 pounds in the offseason. The best thing about Pat White is that he's a classy guy, and he's a playmaker. He is a true football player. He cares more for the team than he does himself, and that was evident in the Pittsburgh game when he sacrificed himself and took one hell of a hit. That's the kind of football player I want on my team, I don't know abou you guys.
- Tyler Thigpen came in for Pat White in relief vs Pittsburgh, and did well early, but ended up throwing a costly interception at the 2 yard line. He's and excellent backup QB, and that's really all that needs to be said about him.
Halfback
- Ronnie Brown is another player who a lot of people have mixed feelings about on this board. He is the catalyst for the wildcat, which will continue to become less and less of our offense in 2010. With Henne's growth, our run game declines as we will continue to run the ball less and less. Personally, I don't really care. It would be a real bite in the *** if he was not resigned, because I have 2 jersies of his, but in reality, that really doesn't matter. If the front office does let him walk, I imagine we would draft CJ Spiller. However, I think Ronnie will be with us for one more year due to all the CBA mess. Not sure though.
- Ricky Williams. Well he did his best to carry this team after Brown went down, but at 32 years old, he simply couldn't do it. For a couple of games he was great, but beyond that he was nothing special. He will play his last NFL season next year, and then call it a career. He's an excellent compliment to Brown and ultimately I think he'll retire if Brown is not back for another season with the Dolphins.
- Pat Cobbs is another excellent football player. Very versatile, and is another guy who cares more for the team than he does himself. He will be coming off of a bad knee injury. he should make the roster, but you never know. I think we'll either carry 4 runningbacks, or else Cobbs, Sheets, and Hilliard will battle it out.
- Kory Sheets is a guy we really didn't see much out of, therefore I don't have much to say about him
- Lex Hilliard is a downhill runner who just plows over anyone in his path. He really has no ball carrier vision, but with the way he runs, I don't know if he needs any. Proved to be a decent backup during the time Ronnie was out and when he was in relieving Ricky.
Fullback
- Lousaka Polite is maybe the most under appreciated player on this team. He is an excellent blocker and a colossal reason why our running attack was so sucessful this year. He is also a short yardage specialist, and did not fail on converting a 3rd and short or 4th and short in 2009. Great player, and I hope he is in Miami for years to come.
Wide Reciever
- Ted Ginn has an up and down year, He started well, then played very poorly, and then started playing well again toward the end. From week 11-17, Ted Ginn really stepped up his game. He made many great catches, and didn't have many drops. Many people want him gone, but I think he'll be back on the team next year.
- Greg Camarillo was clutch all year long and he is another guy who is all about the team, not himself. He bounced back from an acl injury that happened in week 10 of 2008, and had a great 2009 season. Not statistically, but if you're a Miami Dolphins fan, you know what I'm talking about.
- Davone Bess was a chain moving machine this year. I think he caught somewhere around 76 passes, which is 4th best in franchise history. He is an outstanding slot reciever, and was making plays for the Dolphins all year long. He is definately a keeper, and should be a good player for years to come.
- Brian Hartline came in as a rookie out of Ohio State and beat out Pat Turner and ended up getting signifigant playing time. He played very well this year too, and looks like he may be a keeper too. I don't know how many TD's he caught, but I'm almost positive he was our leading reciever as far as TD's go. He should end up being an excellent number 2.
- Pat Turner is probably the guy who will get the axe if we are to obtain a number 1 reciever by free agnecy or via the draft. When a guy can't get on the field, there is a problem.
Tight End
- Anthony Fasano had an up and down year as far as recieving goes. He is a great blocker which right now is what Miami needs. Losing David Martin really hurt his season. He and David Martin were a great pair, but unfortunately, injuries happen.
- Joey Haynos is another good blocking tight end, but terrible reciever. Once we get a better tightend, I think Fasano will slide into his place and Haynos will get cut.
Tackle
- Both Jake Long and Vernon Carey played at a high level all year long. Long had a slow start, but eventually played as well as he ever had. Carey played well too, and it looks like we have our 2 tackles for the next 5-10 years.
Guard
- Whether it was Nate Garner, Justin Smiley, or Donald Thomas, Miami was getting great play from the offensive guard position all throughout the course of the year.
Center
- Jake Grove was traded for in the offseason, and it seems like he turned out to be a good pickup. He handled Marcus Stroud, Vince Wilfork, and Kris Jenkins just to name a couple of the big space eater Grove faced. It looks like our offensive line is set for years and years to come, which is always a good foundation for your franchise.
Defensive End
- Randy Starks emerged as one of our best defensive players this year. He had several game changing sacks, and was explosive off the line all year long. He was always disrupting the running game which was a big reason why our run defense was so good.
- Phillip Merling stepped up his play from his 08 season, but didn't start because of how well our other defensive ends were playing. I think he will eventually be a good player, but for right now he is best in a limited role.
- Kendall Langford had another good year, but was over shadowed by Randy Starks. Being a 3-4 end, none of these guys get much recognition. We have some good depth at defensive end, which is key in a good 3-4 defense.
Nose Tackle
- Jason Ferguson came to Miami to be a stop gap until we could draft a replacement nose tackle, or until Paul Solia could be forged into one. He's on his way out now, and Miami needs to hurry up in replacement.
- Paul Solia was average at best this year, which is not what you want out of a 3-4 nose tackle. If you're going to run a sucessful 3-4, then you need a good nose tackle. Dan Williams could be an option in the draft. But it's pretty obvious Paul Solia is no better than average, which isn't good enough.
Outside Linebacker
- Jason Taylor and Joey Porter are both old players and at this point stop gaps. Both used to be players at the top of their position, but unfortunately, those days have passed them by.
- Cam Wake is a pass rush specialist. If he could improve in coverage, he would probably earn a starting spot. I imagine he'll work hard all offseason long to get better, and start next year. With any luck, we'll need only 1 outside linebacker.
- Charlie Anderson is one of those players who explodes, and then disappears. He is a career backup, but a good player to have in a limited role and a relief role.
Inside Linebacker
- Channing Crowder is very much like Bart Scott. Bart Scott looked great next to Ray Lewis... By himself though? He's nothing special, just like Crowder. I'd love for us to draft Rolando McClain or Brandon Spikes. It would improve the ILB position by a lot. Getting a solid player a ILB is a must this offseason.
Cornerback
- Vontae Davis was our first found draft choice and played extremely well for a first year player, learning one of the toughest positions there is. Same goes for Sean Smith. I hope to see more and more out of both of them as each season goes by, and I have no doubt we all will.
- Nate Jones is our nickel corner, and has done a fine job this season. He is excels at corner blitzes, and even managed to get 2 picks this season. Resign him and let him keep playing nickel.
- Jason Allen really stepped it up this year. He played very well at special teams, and improved drastically at corner. If he's willing to take a pay cut, he'd be worth keeping around.
Safety
- Gibril Wilson came to Miami and we all had high hopes. Time and time again this season, he has proved he just isn't cut out to start. It some of it on the rookies? Yes, but as a veteran, your job is to help those rookies and work together. Not blast them everytime you make a mistake. Wilson better step up his game, if it's not too late for him already.
- Yeremiah Bell put together his best season as a pro thus far in my opinion. He had 3 picks, 2 sacks, and 120 tackles. That's not too shabby, in fact that's excellent. He has been a strong point in our secondary, and hopefully Miami can build off of that.
Kicker
- Dan Carpenter is a stud. Nothing else needs to be said. This guy is a complete stud.
Punter
- Brandon Fields is average. We could use an upgrade, but it's not some glaring need. He can stay for a few more years. We shouldn't be punting much anyway.
Yeah, I know this is a lot to read. If you got this far, thanks for reading and I appreciate the feedback. Thanks is advance, I really do appreaciate those who read all this. Tell me what you think!
