I far as I know, his previous contract would still be valid.

$3.735 million (2005)
$3.74 million (2006)
$3.5 million (2007)

Plus incentives.

I'm sure, Miami would re-work his deal in some manner though
That is correct. We are looking at a 3 million cap hit.... which is a problem considering we only have 2 million in space available and need to sign a DT, PRONTO!

If Chester is gone and TimBo retires, that frees up like 3 million and cutting DBo frees up 2.2 million.

Therefore we would have no problem getting him back.

IMO, I could see how we would make him totally restructure his contract.... I dont know if I would take him back at his same rate... he has been away from the game smokin for a year, he DEFINATELY cant be in the same shape he was when he was rackin up 1600 yards. Personally, with Brown on the roster, I wouldnt pay him 3 million. I would make him restructure for the vet min and make his contract incentive laden... a la David Boston.

The only problem with that idea is the only leverage a team has to force players to take a pay cut is to threaten to cut them.

Releasing Ricky from his contract gives him all the options of a FA and should give the Dolphins no right to go after bonus money for breach of contract.

Even still, I would ask for him to restructure. We might not have the leverage but to pay a guy 3 million to be your #2 RB when you have been away from the league for a year smoking makes no financial sense....... Its silly to have 2 starting RBs... plus we gotta pay Ronnie #2 pick draft money and THEN Ricky 3 million? Thats not an ideal situation.

I dont want to release him and get nothing for him, but then again I dont want to pay him 3 mil when we drafted Ronnie.

good point and Saban already seems to be talking like Bownes might not be back.

I wound't mind having a one two bunch in the back field. Hell line Ronnie Brown up at WR every now and then to give defenses a fit.

A simple restructure like I suggested in one previous post in this thread pays him his money and reduces his cap charge this year to a managable amount.

Trying to punish Ricky, which I understand, by reducing his salary and still wanting him back for future value doesn't mix. If Ricky does come back successfully the $4 million a year for his talent is cheap. If Ricky comes back and doesn't have the heart to succeed then he will still be on the hook for the judgment. Though I don't know if there are any assets to collect.

Of course when Ricky comes back and if they try to renegotiate a new deal the terms still have to be fair or there is no incentive for him to come back. He would be better off trying to declare bankruptcy voiding the judgment and NFL contract trying to come back into the league as a free agent. That option is one the league does not want to happen so they will pressure the Dolphins not to let that happen.

Good Points.

From Ricky's prespective, what does he have to lose? He comes back and says NO to a restructure and forces the Fins to release him. From that viewpoint, Ricky wins since he wants to play just not in Miami.

The reason why the Dolphins sued Ricky was for breach of contract. The arbitrator found Ricky in breach which pretty much means the Dolphins get to start over with a new contract with Ricky. I look for Ricky to sign a 1-2 year deal like Boston's with the judgement against him waived unless he breaches the new contract. There is no way he returns under the old contract. BTW, thanks Ricky for getting rid of Wany.

our cap space now means nothing. our cap space in july could mean a lot. after cuts, we'd have more than 2 million free if we didn't sign anyone from here on out.

guys let's not forget it's ricky. After he shakes the rust off he'll be worth every penny.

say he does come back. the fins will restructure his deal for sure.
so by him comming back, he would then NOT have to pay the team 8 mil.

so what if in 1 year, at a (very low) deal he restructured his contract to, he then retires again. whould he ONLY owe the new very low amount to the team??

we have 2 mil available I beleive, if we cut David Bowens like someone just said we free up 2.2 mil. but then we only have 4.2 mil available and Saban wants to sign a DT, if we do so then we won't have room for Ricky's 3 mil and since I don't even want him back I say we forget about him or sign him for min which I don't think he will accept
