With Rob being fired, I know this thread will be inevitable. How he failed in NO with some of that talent though... Its curious to me though (and why I stared the thread) that Ryan was also asked to compact his playbook. What gives? these athletes are being paid MILLIONS of dollars...yet they cant take in a whole play book? This league is getting lax. I know a lot of these kids tend to go to state universities and its not exactly hard to get degrees, but c'mon. You cant complain about learning a play book when you play the most lucrative sport in the world. We had to do it, NO did it...Im sure others have. Does anyone have any insight into this? It just boggles my mind how these players keep demanding easier jobs.

It happened with Coyle too didn't it. The players said his system was too complex and made them think too much instead of reacting

Shrinking the defensive playbook is a desperation move to try and salvage some functionality from an under performing group...writing was on the wall for Rob Ryan.

It did. I said that in the OP. I just dont understand how you can, as a player, not put effort into learning a system. You are getting paid to do this. If I decided to tell my boss I didnt feel like learning a new programming language at work I would be shown the door.

I don't get the complex defense thing. NE is one of those teams by the looks of things run alot of defensive stuff. Yet, You rarely see mental lapses etc.

No you didn't say that about Coyle and his playbook in the OP. And I don't think the players are too lazy or don't want to learn the playbooks. It's just that some of these coaches are outsmarting themselves with their play calls and it results in confusion or lack of execution. Just like Lazor and his 90% shotgun/50% screen type of offense is not producing. Seems we are having way more success when RT lines up under center. Simplifying everything allows a player to use his instincts more. If the scheme ain't workin, then that's the next best option IMO.

re-read it lol. I said we had to shrink our playbook just like Rob in NO.

I'll agree that some coaches get too clever. But, lets be honest.. These "athletes" have been mollycoddled their entire lives because they can run faster, jump higher yada yada yada. Have you ever noticed how many athletes major in Sociology, Communications, or Kinesiology?

Its unfair to denigrate "state schools". Yeah, there a lot of types like Vince Young & Roethliesberger but there are few Alex Smiths scattered in there. It not just "state schools" that produce blockheads. The University of Miami has matriculated their fair share of idiots whereas UCLA has given us a few productive members of society.

The other day I heard Jason Taylor talking about Rex Ryan's playbook on radio. JT said that when he went to the Jets he was stunned how complex Rex's Defensive playbook was to learn. He described it as by far the most complex playbook that he saw in his NFL career. I don't know if Rob Ryan's playbook is like Rex's but I have a hunch that they were both brought up on the complexity from their Dad.

I don't think the issue is so much defenses being too complex as much as it is people adjusting. Mike Martz was at one point seen as an offensive genius and was the OC then head coach for the greatest show on turf, but as he showed in Detroit, San Diego, and Chicago there were things he didn't/couldn't adjust to. Same can be said with Rex and Buddy. Defense looks great when the blitzing is working, but if you pick up the blitz the defense is beatable. Rex also has had the luxury of having a shut down CB on each of his teams.

They have defensive talent in New Orleans?

You mean Ellerbee doesn't count?

Agree. Look @ how long the Skins used the Joe Gibbs philosophy (minimal plays w/ lots of formations & shifts).

Ethical lapses aside, its Belichick's ability to adapt that are part of the reason the Pats have a dynasty.
