The Florida Panthers acquired forward Todd Bertuzzi in exchange for goaltender Roberto Luongo as part of a five-player trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night.

The Canucks also sent promising young goaltender Alex Auld and defenseman Bryan Allen to the Panthers in exchange for Lukas Krajicek and a sixth-round pick in Saturday's draft in Vancouver.

The Canucks just made themselves the favorite in the Western Conference. Todd Betuzzi is an elite player but he's never going to get over the hit on the Av's forward.

I think its a good trade for the panthers. Luongo a top goalie without a doubt but Bertuzzi has also been a top foward. Bertuzzi had lost the magic he had with morrison and naslund the last year and a half and imo a great passer like jokinen can mesh well with Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi also brings a bruising physical precense to a team that can use one.

Luongo wasnt staying so you get a proven stud for him at least and a good young goalie and dman as well. Taking a downgrade in goal to fill 2 other needs can help you a lot

yeah, i don't think this is bad for Florida at all... besides Bertuzzi, they get a fine young goaltender in Auld, who was the Canucks' MVP this year... and a promising BIG defenseman in Allen...

Consider the fact that Luongo was going to be a free agent after this season, at least they got something for him now, rather than nothing later...

Everyone who is screaming from the rooftops about this trade needs to settle down.

Bertuzzi has been and can be one of the best 10 players on the planet, Brian Allen is a very functional 4th defenseman and Alex Auld is a damn good, young goaltender.

Luongo is an ELITE goaltender...who was going to leave as a free agent and has never won a damn thing.

Fair trade for both teams in my opinion.

BTW...everything I've read about Lucas Krajicek is good. He's the wildcard in this deal in my opinion. I wish I'd seen more of the Panthers this season so I could give an opinion about him.

Unified, Krajicek is a smooth skater and a pretty good player, but Allen projects much higher than he does.

I'll tell you what the wild card in this deal is. (Actually, there are two of them.)

1) Less probable, but Chris Pronger wants out of Edmonton. Mike Keenan loves Chris Pronger. With no long-term financial commitment to Luongo, Florida could afford Pronger. Mike Van Ryn and Anthony Stewart for Pronger is a possibility for Florida.

2) More probable; Ed Jovanovski is a former Florida star. Ed Jovanovski shares an agent with Todd Bertuzzi. Ed Jovanovski is close friends with Todd Bertuzzi. Jovocop has a house down here. Jovocop will likely sign with Florida as a FA.

So if the trade is Luongo and Krajicek for Bertuzzi, Auld, Allen, AND Jovanovski, which seems very possible at the moment, the nod goes to the Panthers.

Keep in mind that Luongo still has to sign with Vancouver, and just because he is with a new team doesn't mean his demands are going to be any different. It's a strange contract situation there, similar to the one Martin Havlat has in Ottawa, to compare for some of you northerners who may be more in tune with that situation. If Luongo plays a year in BC and then flees the coop, it's a huge cous for Florida. Bertuzzi is a free agent as well, but if things go well, I see him re-signing. It's a good market for him.

Oh, and Luongo is very good, but he's never made the playoffs before. The teams in front of him haven't been great, really until last year, but it's still notable.

Jovo will be a Panther the first day of free agency in my opinion. The Canucks knew he was a goner so losing him is a non factor.

The Krajicek thing is interesting. The Canucks REALLY needed to add some team speed. As for Allen projecting higher, I dunno about that...I've seen him about 40 times a year for 2 years and in my opinion he is what he is...a functional #4 defensman.

He's pretty good in his own end of the rink and has a decent shot from the point. He's also a limited skater (although he has improved), does'nt offer a lot as far as outlet passing goes, will get beaten outside and has some injury history.

I think if you look at it from just the basis of the partys involved in the trade it is a saw off.

Like I said in the "NHL Offseason Thread" (somewhere you need to be BTW...your input would be great) Nonis has to sign Luongo...and that could be difficult. I think he offers him 5 years, 30-34 million.

I'll check it out, man. Luongo already turned down 6 and 30, I believe. He wants a one-year deal.

Jovo may be a non-factor for the Nucks, but not for the Cats. This definitely paves the way for him.

the real irony is that if we do sign jovo, with auld coming back in the trade we'll have 2 guys we traded for pavel bure back some 7 years later

That's a good point...Auld was in that deal, too, I forgot. I knew we originally drafted him and then traded him in 1999, but I didn't match that up.

Auld was'nt in the Bure deal....he was traded from Florida to Vancouver for a 3rd rounder in 2001.

The goalie in the Bure deal was Kevin Weekes.

Oh, now I'm confused...

But did you check out my incredibly longwinded post in the NHL offseason thread? You ask, I deliver.
