MTV Generation is a term used to describe the young demographic, those born in the era of MTV and similar programming. This generation is unique in that they were exposed to an entirely different form of stimulation than those who preceded them. MTV is credited with inventing a unique visual format and style. Originating with early music videos, meant to advertise a musical product, directors/editors/producers pressed to fit in a wide variety of visual stimiluli in a compact timespan, a) due to time constraints and b) to pique and maintain the attention of the audience. This format later seeped into other more traditional forms of programming on the network and eventually into the wide spectrum of television programming and other media, everything from sitcoms, to films, to video games, etc. This style employs many fast cuts and quick edits, never focussing on one scene or visual for more than a few seconds.. Enough to give an old man a seizure...

You may ask, "what in the heck does this have to do with Ronnie Brown?".. Well, Let me explain. This visual format has conditioned its viewers to expect instant visual gratification. It starts there, but that also works into all other facets of life.. instant VISUAL gratification isnt enough, we expect to be stimulated, NOW, immediately, We dont have TIME to stand around and WAIT for something to develop. We need constant bombardment of stimuli. Instant Gratification is the mantra of this generation. Now, just take a look at this forum, 2 games, results arent satisfactory, CUT HIM. HE SUCKS, this is that mentality, applied to something which does not neccesarily function in the same manner.. Patience is no longer a virtue, its a burden.Patience is, well, boring to this generation. I am part of this generation and I too am conditioned for instant gratification, but, unlike some of my ilk, I understand that life doesnt occur in fast cuts and quick edits.. Its a gradual process, and within any process, stages of development occur.. You cant jump from A to C (without acknowledging B) in 2 seconds, just like you cannot formulate a valid conclusion on Ronnie Brown in 2 games...

NOTE: There have been studies done on fast cut visual styles, video games, and other modern media formats and their impact on their audience, some evidence supports the notion that excessive exposure to this correlates with ADD and ADHD..

interesting post. It isn't just the young people (MTV generation) though that have short attention spans, a thirst for instant gratification, and a sloppy combination of the two. It is however more pronounced within young people. But I bet some of the "Ronnie is a bust" crowd are over 30.

now get off my lawn

I read a study on this phenomenon, now there could be some mitigating factors such as the only people heavily exposed to these visual formats are still relatively young at the moment, so it could be age, rather than the stimilus that is really the issue in terms of impatience, but the study concluded that these symptoms were more pronouned in this young generation than in previous young generations.

I'm sorry what is this thread about? I zoned out half way through.....

I kind of agree with you, but I also think it's all the sports reporters and experts play a part too. One person comments and all of a sudden the next thing is our #2 draft pick is a bust after 2 games.

would be interesting to see the ages of all the "cut ronnie" folks but I believe I saw some of all ages. I dont blame it on MTV, I just think its people who dont know sports very well.

Oh, Im sure they do, but sports commentators have their own motives for making such claims and inciting reactions. Their business is one where ratings/readership is their primary focus. The best way to ensure maximum viewership is to chum the waters and let the sharks feed.. Those edgy and outlandish observations or postulations they make will lead to people both enthralled and incensed by the commentator's comments reading/watching their columns, ensuring ratings.

It happens all the time, heck I even do it.. Read a Prisco article, then rush to finheaven with a thread saying "Look at what that dope Prisco wrote!" then you get a 9 page thread of people saying how much of an idiot he is, in the meantime, Prisco got all of those people to read his column and cashes in.

its interesting and i see it all the time - being 19 - a lot of my peers act that way and i cant stand it - i think that espically(spelled wrong) with this team and the way we played last year - you just have to let the players and the team as a whole grow and wait till later this season and next season - remember its not just one player learning a new system but an entire team

Don't tell me we have a poster with an IQ. I didn't think most of our posters could spell IQ. Well thought out, interesting read and most probably alot more right than wrong. There's good and bad to this instant stimuli. I grew up with the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, the Stones and Beatles and of course Bob Dylan. I don't think todays music compares and I think it won't be remembered like the guys I mentioned. As far as how it relates to Ronnie it might be a stretch.

Its not MTV persay, they might not even watch MTV, but all of the alternate media that spawn from that original MTV "style" is exposed to this new generation since birth. Like everything, these new media formats have their drawbacks and it has its advantages.. drawbacks being extreme impatience and reactionary mentality..

I was reading your post but halfway through I got bored and picked up the remote to change to another post. :jk:

Hey, I'm 40 years old and was in high school when MTV came on the scene...this isn't just about teens and twenty-somethings...it about generations coming after the baby boomers. We all need to focus on patience and living in the Now.

Correct. I myself, am 17 years old and absolutely cannot stand those idiotic posts about how Ronnie is a bust. I think people just expect too much when hes drafted number two. They don't even mention that Alex Smith was drafter #1 and is riding the bench. It takes time for things to develop. Hes used to splitting time at the college speed. When he is thrown right into the NFL speed and being the premier back, im sure all the changes and pressure hit him like a load of bricks. When ricky comes back, he will be splitting time and given the competition to WANT to work harder. But please dont say its on the MTV generation. I mean its just so stereotypical to say an age group is responsible for the threads.

I remember the day MTV started...

martha quinn....

who knows the name of the first video aired??

Little trivia for ya!
