Rookie Contract Question

I think the most common contracts are probably 4 year contracts these days because that allows them to cover the RFA year so teams don't have to worry about it. Big name rookies (1st rounders) and late picks are probably different, though.

1st rounders usually get 5 years and some even get 6 year deals. Expect a 5 year deal for Ronnie. 2nd to 5th rounders usually seem to get 4 year deals, but maybe Roth could get a 5 year deal, but expect a 4 year deal for Roth, Crowder, Daniels and Alabi. Vickerson will probably get a 2 or 3 year contract.

The length is declining. It was usually 7 years then last year it dropped to 6 and this year the length dropped to 5.

Who cares anymore. In this day and age of the NFL, most players won't be playing out those 3 or 4 year deals. They will have 2 good seasons and then wants mega money. It sucks, because you want to root for us to have an amazing draft, and see Roth, Crowder, Wright, Daniels light it up, but then you have to be scared that they will sit out next years camp or the year after wanting a new deal. The NFL is heading in a bad direction.

I think you're being a bit dramatic about the way things are. It does matter because we lost Wale a year earlier than we had to because he got a 3 year contract instead of a 4 year contract. Some players are going to hold out, but the vast majority are going to honor their contracts because holding out makes you look a lot worse than waiting out your time under contract does. To whatever extent somebody wants to renegotiate the contract, those extra years also help because they give the team just that much more leverage on them.

Mcmike didnt hold out

Adding a holdout to his current troubles would make him a real brainiac. Even if he had been planning to, I think he'd have to honor his contract now.

Randy has told me two things, and this I know of him.

He LOVES FOOTBALL and loves winning, and his best friend Chris Chambers has also talked to him about his situation from experience. Randy is represented by Drew and could have held out. Drew does not hold out players, players hold themselves out. Randy knows he will get paid, and he told me he is very fortunate playing in the NFL, he isn't going to lose a precious year. Also, training, working out, and doing all the drills helps your body more then it hurts it for the season.

Uhh just so you guys know. He was asked if he'd hold out, mcmike responded "a hold out wan't even in the back of my mind."

Yeah, I have heard that because of a new CBA not being agreed on yet the maximum rookie contract length would be for 5 years. (No, I don't have a link) Expect a lot of holdouts with the first rounders this year as it will take some real creativity to get the players to agree to a deal. Unfortunately Alex Smith and Ronnie will set the bar and their contracts will be mind boggling in their complexity with escalators, possible voidable years, and lots of performance incentives. I am glad I don't have to read through those contracts cause some of these will be thicker than the Bible.
