Rookie QB's

That's funny, on Dan Patricks show they were saying Garcia is pushing Harrington for the starters job? I don't know, I don't really follow the Lions, but its interesting.
  • Two games into the Lions' preseason schedule, backup quarterback Jeff Garcia leads the team in touchdown passes -- one. He also leads the team in interceptions -- three.
  • He's forced the ball when he shouldn't have, trying to make something happen.
  • Harrington was 9-for-9 and 100 yards in the opening preseason game and 5-for-6 and 46 yards in the second game, giving him a two-game total of 14-for-15 (93.3 percent) for 146 yards and a 107.2 passer rating

  • It is widely known that it takes on average three years to develop a productive QB in any NFL system. Yes there are exceptions and that is exactly what they are "exceptions".
  • This years top rated QB are typical: Smith is struggling and reports out of GB are that Rodgers is in danger of slipping to third string. The pressure from fans and franchises let alone the intricacies of the pro game can do more damage than good for number 1 picks.
  • Highly drafted QB's are no sure things. And in fact you may get more bang for your buck in the later rounds.
  • IMO there is no question we need to put a QB via the draft on the roster in 2006 and unless the guy is totally polished I would not do it in round one.
  • IMO we also need to position ourselves for a QB trade. If proven game changers like Moss and TO can get traded so can high profile QB's even if they are still in the developmental process.
  • Give me a dominate LT, DT, WR or shutdown corner in the top 15 and get your QB to develop in rounds 3-5.

The "bang for the buck" is better for later round QBs only when you find one worth a darn. The Tom Bradys and Kurt Warners are few and far between. You can draft mid-late round QBs for decades without hitting on one thats a keeper (or at least a starter). Consider how many QBs have been drafted in the mid to late rounds over the past 6 or 7 years that simply disappeared into obscurity. Yes, the risks and certainly the contract costs are higher with a 1st round guy, but so is the potential for success.
If you are in need of a QB, and there are QBs available that are considered to be 1st round material, you gotta pull the trigger.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I have checked into the stats and there is a slight edge to number one draft picks developing into "franchise QB's" over lower picks.... unfortunately it's still a very big crap shoot... It's also not like there are an abundance of "franchise QB's" in the league right now... but I get your drift.

Omar Jacobs is my pick for QB, Matt Leinart would also be good

Statistically, it's not that close. The accepted success % is about 50% for 1st rd QBs (that number will go up and down depending on individual definitions of success). In the later rounds there are many, many more QBs drafted. For QBs drafted in rd 3 or later the success rate is under 5%. It's a crap shoot either way, but I'd rather be in the crap shoot that gives me a 50% chance of winning. Especially since I believe good scouting can up that %.

i hope we are not in a position to get him. although it may be better long term for us. hopefully jacobs has another year like last year, i like him alot, from what ive sen of him. but your absolutely right, the reason i support aj playing is cuz if we had to draft a qb, thats gonna set our rebuilding back big time...

can Omar Jacobs have another video game stat year? lol

We could draft:

Matt Leinart
Vince Young
Omar Jacobs
Charlie Whitehurst
Marcus Vick
Chris Leak

We could pick up:

Tim Couch
Jeff George
Kordell Stewart
Any cut after preseason

We need a QB badly. Really the only postion we need a HUGE upgrade on. Obviously we need depth as well and Jeff George and Kordell Stewart are funny names to bring up but I think any of the 9 guys listed above are an improvement.

well I would skip the FA's in that list, hopefully Brees if he has another good year or Rivers will be FAs.

i watched a lot of USC games.. personally, its scares me how much Tom Brady like he is... he has great poise and is just a flat out winner, two national champs, one heisman.. that could well read 3 and 2 after this season.

He also has a very talented team around him. How much can he do on his own?
Marino and Elway were unique in that respect.
