This has already been covered on this site I'm sure but since I new here hopefully you all will forgive me of the redundancy of this topic if it has in fact been covered already.

I seen on ESPN this weekend Roger Goodell has claimed he wants something done about the "ridiculous" salaries of NFL rookies. This is something that should have been done a long time ago. Correct me if I am wrong but does'nt the NBA do something similar with rookies and the amount of money the make out of the draft.

NFL rookies getting paid 50+ and 60+ million dollar contracts untested and right out of college is just downright stupid in my opinion. On Mike and Mike the other day they talked about this as well Golic was saying as a former player he says most veteran players also agree.

I think rookies salaries should be set based on draft position. For example.

#1 pick gets a 2 year 3 million dollar contract. Then there could always be clauses written in for good performance bonuses and options for the team to restructure if and when they feel the investment is right.

For example Jake Long I love the pick of Jake Long but there is no way he deserves to be the highest paid offensive lineman before every playing a down of NFL football. The owners and teams need to be protected from rookies who come to the NFL and never make it.

Does anyone know what the NBA does for rookies. I know it is something similar and when drafted into the NBA I think salaries are pretty much already set in stone before anyone is drafted.

This is something that should be done soon. It will free up money for teams to go out and pay free agents who are proven NFL talent instead of getting into cap problems on draft day.

Love the idea of a rookie salary cap. There salaries at the top of the draft are starting to get out of hand.

correct me if im wrong, is there some rule in place forcing teams to offer these rookies these huge contracts?

Players Union

the reason it hasn't been done is because the players union will never agree to it.

From what I am hearing the players union is not totally against the idea. However Gene Upshaw is and that guy is a total tool. Upshaw needs to be removed from his post he is a moron. Owners are not against spending money but giving out top money contracts to a guys who haven't proven a damn thing in the NFL is just retarded.

It just makes no sense. Veteran players would benefit the most from this change freeing up more money to offer them.

Or they could just limit rookie contracts to two years contracts and give owners and the players to sign extensions at the end of those two years simply based on performance. This would limit rookies being paid like proven veterans and ensure a player has a chance at free agency after 4 years.

Upshaw is a moron and needs to quit.

Aren't they trying to force Gene Upshaw out? I remember hearing about an e-mail that Matt Stover had sent or something wanting a change at the head of the NFLPA. There is no QUESTION there should be a rookie salary cap in the NFL, it's just foolish that Jake Long is making more than 15 year veteran lineman who've busted their a** for years competing for a starting job. Long may turn out to be a hell of a player, but he's unproven, and he hasn't earned the money he was given. It's unfair.

Actually there is. Not getting your players signed and losing games means means GMs and coaches get fired. It's an unwritten rule.

I still dont understand whats preventing teams from making rookies reasonable offers to begin with? Rookies are signing contracts being offered to them. If they dont like the offers and want to sit it out a year, let them. Its ridiculous teams agree to sign these guys at such high rates with all the garuntees in place. Capping a rookies salary, however, is not a very good solution.

Whats really unfair is charging the fans $40 just to park. Personally Im sick of everyone in the NFL crying about there not being enough money. When you look at the product they provide and the money they are all making collectivly. Its way out of hand. Until they start talking about lowwering the finacial burden on the fans, I could care less which greedy group gets our money. Nzone of them deserve the kinda money they get.

It's not hard to understand. The agents have learned to manipulate the CBA and get the rookies more money. As I said, coaches and GMs do not have the luxury of letting players sit out. If they lose games they lose their jobs. That is the problem. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. Rookies get too much money.

Jake Long, Matt Ryan, and pretty much other top draftee could do absolutely NOTHING in their entire careers and still be set for life.

isn't Goodell also against a rookie doing something like the nba rookie salary cap well at least I heard that on Fins Radio

A rookie cap may have a great unintended consequence. It would all but eliminate the need for an agent for the first contract. That should keep a lot of scum bag agents off of college campuses, trying to convince juniors that should leave early and cause NCAA infractions on the school. The ridiculous thing is the union should be all for it, undrafted players are not in the NFLPA and get no vote. The current players would get a bigger chunk of the cap money. Rookies would even keep more of their money if they don't give three percent to an agent if there is essentially no negotiation. The one caveat would be a limit on the number of years like 3 year contracts for rounds 1-3 and 2 years on the rest of the draft and probably a shortening of the service times necessary for free agency.

Too bad brett isnt still on our site. I would like to hear his oppinion on this.
