The Dolphins traded up for Rutgers receiver Leonte Carroo and it wasn’t cheap.
Miami gave up a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft (that it later reacquired) and third- and fourth-round picks in next year’s draft (but Miami likely will have third- and fourth-round compensatory picks for losing free agents Lamar Miller and Olivier Vernon).
There’s a reason the Dolphins badly wanted Carroo. Owner Stephen Ross said he was the No. 2 receiver on their board. He was selected as the ninth receiver in the draft.
Before the draft, Carroo told NJ.com that he believed he was the best receiver available. At worse, he expected to be drafted in the second round.

“That’s just my personal belief that I feel like I’m the top receiver in this draft, but they obviously have guys that are rated higher than me,” Carroo told NJ.com. “Those guys will probably be picked in the first round and I feel like if a team wants to take a chance on me, they’ll take me in the first round. If not, I’ll go somewhere in the second.”
Carroo suffered a high ankle sprain last season and then aggravated the injury at the Senior Bowl.
He was also arrested on assault charges in September although the charges were later dropped.
It’s reasons that might he might have slipped in to the third.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer called Carroo “a tremendous player” and “a legitimate deep threat” during the draft broadcast.
“He’s a guy that we had to either have help 1-on-1 with him or knew where he was all the time,” Meyer said.
Carroo — 6-foot, 211 pounds — can play in the slot and outside so expect the Dolphins to move him around.

He's gonna be a good one IMO.

Parker will be he alpha, but he's not gonna be a scrub at all. Add him to what Miami already has they may have a dominate WR corps.

After a couple days of looking at the stuff available on Carroo, I'm not that high on the pick.

I think he will eventually evolve into a dependable WR in the NFL but never a gamebreaker. He'll be an Anquan Boldin type: If on a team with multiple legit threats, he'll make a killing underneath and in intermediate routes. But he'll never threaten legit NFL DBs down the field. He's got roughly Hartline speed (even though his catch radius is much better, and ten times the physicality). In college, Carroo struggled against legit NFL skilled CBs. And he seldom beat CBs with speed. The most times he got open deep, the CB bit on route or backfield stuff, allowing him to run deep -- only to have the CB pretty much catch up to him, many times. Not great speed.

Note that I'm not saying that speed is everything. I'm just saying that if your 2 WR can't beat single coverage downfield from NFL level CBs, he's gonna be limited, at least at first. I don't see Carroo as doing well right off the bat. He feasted against poorer quality competition in college and struggled against high quality competition for the most part. He's more Boldin than Watkins, imo.

I think for what Miami gave up to get Carroo, they are not gonna get their return. Not at first, at least.

Now, there is an upside to picking him that I see, and it's this: God forbid if Landry goes down, Miami will have another physical player to man the slot and underneath.

I just don't see Miami finding its golden 2 WR in this pick.

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer. It's just that if someone can show me any tape where Carroo uses actual speed in college to separate and consistently beat NFL caliber CBs, I'd love to see it.

I thought Carroo played well against Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State?

If he turns into Antoine Bolden, I'll take that right now, no questions asked

Another thing: How can you call it a steal when you gave up three picks?

That is rolling the dice on immediate better-than-average play. Not a steal. HUGE price to pay when two other draft picks could have been used on higher upside players with less immediate expectation of return.

Bottom line: Burning three picks, and you STILL have to spend two years developing him into a better-than-average starter, and the team loses big time.

As long as you realize what Boldin does whenever he's the focus of the other team's top two CBs. In other words: look at what he's done in SF.

Not only individually, but toward team success. What? Not much.

Boldin was a monster at Baltimore cause he owned the underneath and intermediate stuff, with two legit 4.3 NFL caliber WRs on the outside.

You maybe right Debbie, but he has very good hands when he gets near the ball - very few drops. His skill is taking the catch in one on one matchup. Maybe Ryan Tannehill can be a better QB than he experienced at Rutgers.

I agree about the hands. And the physicality. Which is why I see Boldin as his upside.

Great role playing WR just not a legit, dominating 2, imo.

Hard to consider it a steal when u trade 3 picks for one guy. We gave up plenty for the kid. We just better hope he ****ing pans out. I hate that we gave up 2017 picks for him and I dont care if we are getting comp picks. Those comp picks next year could have used on top of the other 3rd and 4th rounders.

I would venture to say Boldin was a legit #1 for years.

IMO, he wasn't a difference maker until Baltimore.

Any time teams run their offense through possession WRs, they usually suck on offense. No offense to Hartline, Bess or Landry. Or Boldin.

Baltimore was the best thing to ever happen to Boldin. He got his ring and got to be a threat according to his abilities.

I feel sorry for the teams that lined him up as a 1.
