DAVIE -- The Miami Dolphins can be glad they have three exhibition games to go before the regular season starts, because their secondary needs a lot of improvement.
Miami gave up four touchdown passes of 50 yards or more in a 31-26 loss Saturday night to Jacksonville. Four Jaguars quarterbacks combined to go 14-for-27 for 332 yards.
Repeated blown coverages underscored what the Dolphins already knew -- their pass defense is a work in progress. Coach Nick Saban acquired five defensive backs during the offseason, including first-round draft pick Jason Allen, and Miami frequently shuffled that personnel during the first exhibition game.
"On each of the four big plays we gave up on defense, there was a mental error,'' Saban said Sunday. "We didn't cover the right guys on two occasions. Those plays can be corrected. The fact they were more mental in nature than physical is a positive in terms of being able to make corrections.''
