DAVIE -- The Miami Dolphins can be glad they have three exhibition games to go before the regular season starts, because their secondary needs a lot of improvement.

Miami gave up four touchdown passes of 50 yards or more in a 31-26 loss Saturday night to Jacksonville. Four Jaguars quarterbacks combined to go 14-for-27 for 332 yards.

Repeated blown coverages underscored what the Dolphins already knew -- their pass defense is a work in progress. Coach Nick Saban acquired five defensive backs during the offseason, including first-round draft pick Jason Allen, and Miami frequently shuffled that personnel during the first exhibition game.

"On each of the four big plays we gave up on defense, there was a mental error,'' Saban said Sunday. "We didn't cover the right guys on two occasions. Those plays can be corrected. The fact they were more mental in nature than physical is a positive in terms of being able to make corrections.''

Glad to see Sabans on top of it. Also, most teams do not have as capable a back up as david gerrard. I think thats a fact that most people are forgetting.

in your first preseason game it should be expected to be full of mental mistakes

I agree. If our secondary struggles, the whole defense suffer, even with good pressure from the front seven. However, it was the first game, lots of new players, and missing two starters, so for a first effort it is promising. Mental mistakes can be fixed a lot easier than physical like lack of speed or strength.

They will improve by the season opener...

Yeah, Gerrard could be a starter in like, 12 other teams in this league.

With Taylor in the game, who says that the plays even go on long enough for any QB to expose mental errors.

I think Miami will be okay.

also with daniels not playing, and jason allen not ready to contribute, there were a few things in our starting defense that probably won't be a concern come sept. 7th.

The difference between this year and last is that we actually have the talent to be a good secondary this year. I think after last year there is a bit of overreaction thinking that our DB's will stink again, but you have to remember that we have upgraded the talent and especially the depth. Most of them are learning a complex new system, but by week one I'm confident they'll be ready to go.

Not only that, but do you guys realize that we played 16 people at the DB positions last nite? There is no way you'll find continuity doing that. I'm not at all concerned with our secondary as of yet.

I also like what Nick said in his PC about the chemistry and communication among the younger players. Basically when Zach, Channing, Kevin Carter and the gang were in there, they were able to call the defense, make the adjustments and line everyone properly, and so, the defense did beautifully in the first 3 to 4 possessions. However, when younger, less experienced players started shuttling in and out, the chemisty was upset and the proper calls and alignments weren't getting set up. As Nick said, Mental mistakes that can be corrected with film study, practice, and game experience. I think this is another area where not having Travis Daniels on the field hurt. There is obvious work that needs to be done, but the work is in the mental part, not the "we don't have the players with the ability" part.
