I just heard that Mike Holmgren has announced that Jim Mora Jr., is going to be the next Seahawk's coach, after Holmgren steps down. Don't the Seahawks have to interview a minority before making Mora the coach? I guess when you have an "heir apparent" the Rooney rule no longer applies??

yeah i believe you do not have to go by the rooney rule if you have an heir apparent.

If it did apply, would that have meant Seattle would have got in trouble but Indianapolis wouldn't have? If so, I think that would have been a bit silly as it would be both teams doing the same thing only one wouldn't get in trouble and one would.

As it doesn't apply the above case I guess it doesn't really matter but could, in premise, a team interview only minority candidates if they wanted without breaking the Rooney rule?

Good point Roman, I never thought of that. I guess it's okay if they have an heir apparent which doesn't make much sense to me. They make such a huge deal about it if the rule isn't followed so I wonder why they would change their stance for this? They should just throw it out of the rule book as it really isn't needed nowadays anyway.

it's weird that they make the exception just in this case. I have always been a firm believer that they should modify it to something like, 'if there is a job search, it must include a minority'.

this would cover the 'heir apparent' case like we are seeing in Indy and Seattle, but also cases where the owner knows exactly who they want.

For example, a couple of years ago the Lions got into hot water because of the rooney rule. the problem I had with it, was that they didn't even have a coaching vacancy until Mariucci became available. they fired Mornhinweg ONLY after the 49ers dumped Mooch. it was painfully obvious that he was the guy for the job....but yet they were expected to set up sham interviews with minority candidates...who themselves knew that the job was Mariucci's.

So my modification to the rule would require that if more than 1 candidate is interviewed for the position, then a minority must be interviewd.
