It may work in business, but this the NFL. Every week you are under pressure to perform. If you cannot handle that pressure, which Philbin has demonstrated with the queasy comment, you need to get someone who can.
It’s been three years since Dolphins owner Stephen Ross hired coach Joe Philbin to turn a struggling franchise into a winner.
It hasn’t worked. Philbin is entering his fourth season without a playoff appearance, yet Ross made the curious decision to not only bring him back but give him a one-year contract extension.

“I really believe you don’t get the best out of somebody when they’re operating with a gun to their head,” Ross said Monday at the NFL’s annual meetings in Phoenix.

In any case, it simply avoids the appearance of a "lame duck" coach label.

Had it been a 3 year extension, there'd be cause for concern.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

I hate to have to agree with you because you're on my Sh*t list right now but......Exactly

Yea, he backed Sparano via extension as well. He actually gave him a 2 year extension to save face

Ross is "bad" at this. He shouldn't even be talking. You hired Tannenbaum to do the talking, so let him talk. The fact that you only extended him by 1 year and you have a track record kind of spells out your expectations and the results if those expectations aren't met.

Expectations were to make the playoffs last season, but Philbin and the team fell apart (again). He should have been fired, but he gets another chance... why?

I think the expectation every year is the playoffs . . . but you saw progress from the QB and Ross is inclined to give Lazor/Philbin one more shot without disrupting the gains that Tannehill made.

I still would of fired him, went after Todd Bowles . . . who probably would of kept Lazor and you had 2 great minds on your team. Then you also keep Kacy Rodgers in the fold on defense. Then again, maybe Bowles still bolts for the Jets after we discarded him in 2011.

Because sometimes it's better to do what's best for a cause rather than personally save face or make good on some threat. I'm he sure he thought the team was headed in the right direction, and bringing in someone new would not give them the best chance to win this year. I happen to agree. He could have made good on "playoffs or you are out" talk, but would that put the team in the best position? He's using his head.

this happens a lot in the NFL. This is a make or break year for Philbin regardless of the extension.

I'm actually under the belief that people, do, in fact perform best with a gun to their head (not literally, but metaphorically)

Ross sound silly expecting this to alter Philbin's performance as a coach one way or another, but that's nothing new either....

Which is why he should really just keep quiet, and allow the head of football operations (Tannenbaum), do his job.

Ross likes this spotlight, he likes the celebrity owners, he likes his football team, but you almost have to cringe when he talks.

Like someone else said . . . . he can do all the talking he wants when we are lifting up a trophy, until then, write the check and continue making billions.

Because Philbin has been Ross's guy all along, he's trying to prove everyone wrong. At least he bought the horses.

it's not about Philbin, it's about the team. when players know a HC is a lame duck it can affect them.

But as you point out he's a lame duck coach anyway if we don't win. It's playoffs or bust imo, we ain't the jests or jills, we actually have a capable QB lol. I will say though Geno>>>E.J.
