I was reading a local newspaper here and there was a nice story about Scooby Wright (Press Democrat, Santa Rosa). According to the article in about the middle of the seventh round, Wright got a call from Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. Ross was essentially recruiting Wright should he end up not being drafted.

As it turned out, Scooby Doo was selected by the Dawg Pound, which seems appropriate.

I thought it was pretty cool that the owner was involved with the college free agent pool.

Im sure he loved being called in round 2 thinking hes getting drafted silence at the draft party even and confetti waiting only to be told "if you arent drafted you are our guy"

If Ross and Co. were even thinking about Scooby Wright's name that early in the draft process, one has to wonder why they didn't just draft him with one of their late round picks rather than hope he went undrafted thereby having to compete for his services.

In some ways I agree, in others I wish he would butt out and let the football people handle everything. I really don't want him giving the gm or coaches advice on who he likes or doesn't like in the draft. Especially a young staff, they might feel pressured to do what they think the owner wants instead of what they think is best for the roster.

Seems like really odd timing. And what is Scooby supposed to think....if you want me that bad spend a pick on me. Don't tell me you're not gonna pick me and I will likely go undrafted. geez

I mean I guess it's kinda cool what Ross was trying, in his mind, just don't see how that was gonna work out.

Great point. Definitely not the best decision.

This is pretty normal. You'll hear a lot UDFA say the reason they picked a team was because the amount of interest they showed in them. I've heard players say that coaches had called them 2-3 times during the draft.

Usually its coaches that will call but I assume Ross wanted to help out.

I just wish the attention came from the gm or coaching staff and not Ross. THat's how kickers end up being drafted in the second round.

A yet people think having a bunch of 7th round picks is meaningless.

Nice of Ross is get on the phone.

this is the one guy i was hoping would slip through the cracks. you cant teach instinct
