In NFL circles, Stephen Ross is still a relatively new owner who’s spent seven years unsuccessfully trying to build a winner. In the business world, he’s a kingpin. And he clearly understands the difference.
Ross, 75, and Rob Speyer, the 46-year-old president and CEO of Tishman Speyer nearly came to blows in a recent high-level business meeting, according to a report from Crain’s New York Business.
Ross, the chairman of Related Cos., reportedly screamed: “This isn’t the NFL. I’m not going to be pushed around!
The fight was over a 421-a tax exemption. The program expired at the start of the year after the real estate industry wouldn’t give in to construction unions’ demands involving higher wages for workers.
Speyer reportedly asked if others in the room — a “who’s who of landlords and top executives” — wanted to try to work out a deal with the unions and reinstate the program.
Ross was not a fan of this idea.
Here’s a play-by-play from the Crain’s article:
“Only you” want to restart the talks, Ross said to Speyer, according to three witnesses. Speyer, REBNY’s chairman for the past three years, had tried for months to negotiate a deal before the 421-a program expired. Speyer was infuriated by the remark.
After the meeting was adjourned, Speyer marched over to Ross, and as the pair began arguing, Ross jumped out of his seat.
“This isn’t the NFL,” screamed Ross, who owns the Miami Dolphins. “I’m not going to be pushed around.”
Leonard Boxer, a real estate attorney with law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan who had been sitting
next to Ross, jumped between Ross and Speyer, separating the pair. Several attendees said the confrontation appeared as though it could get physical.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said one eyewitness.

...only can accept being pushed around when it comes to his NFL team? Garbage.

Ross nearly came to blows for his stance on working with construction workers unions and giving the workers higher wages, which he is against.

:ponder: That's a discussion for the PoFo MoFos...

why can't he have that kinda fire when it comes to the Dolphins. wish we could see more of that side sometimes. especially when he should have done something with the whole Miko BS that was going down

I'm picturing it going down something like this.

Lmfao. Nice to know he can be pushed around in NFL dealings though.

This story doesn't have anything to do with the Miami Dolphins football team.

Biggest set back in our history was when he bought the team. Period.

Respectfully disagree. Stephen Ross has spared no expense to try to improve this team. He is paying $350 million of his own money to renovate and modernize JRS. He is passionate about his investment. Say what you will about the direction of the football team, with having Mike Tannenbaum in house and all that, but he's trying. He is no absentee owner, but he is not an overreaching owner either like Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder.

While I can agree that he most certainly has tried his best to improve this team, he just lacks so much football common sense that allows him to be talked into certain things. How many times have we had a horrible football structure during his tenure that you would never see anywhere else.

And we wonder why this team has been in the ****house. Look at the caliber of doofus we have setting the tone.

This is the first year where there hasn't been some awkward shotgun marriage involving the front office - no Sparano extension after missing on Harbaugh, no Jeff Ireland retention after Joe Philbin hire, no Joe Philbin retention after hiring Dennis Hickey. The power structure is unified with Tannenbaum, Grier and their hand picked successor, Adam Gase.

People fret about Mike Tannenbaum, and rightfully so given his track record, but this is the first year where things aren't so royally ****ed in the FO since Ross bought the team from Huizenga.

there's no shotgun marriage with tannenbaum being the Czar of Football operations held-over from a previously failed regime?

it's the same story different cast as far as I'm concerned, I like Gase, and hopefully Tannenabum can do everything he can to NOT eff anything up :)

but to Ross, just because he writes checks doesn't mean he's done a good job at bringing in good football minds and organizing a power structure that worked. money doesn't buy success in the NFL, but I will give you that he has absolutely spared no expense and certainly is doing his best to produce a winner...so far the decisions he's made on power structure and chefs for the kitchen just have not panned out
