In NFL circles, Stephen Ross is still a relatively new owner who’s spent seven years unsuccessfully trying to build a winner.In the business world, he’s a kingpin. And he clearly understands the difference.
Ross, 75, and Rob Speyer, the 46-year-old president and CEO of Tishman Speyer nearly came to blows in a recent high-level business meeting, according to a report from Crain’s New York Business.
Ross, the chairman of Related Cos., reportedly screamed: “This isn’t the NFL. I’m not going to be pushed around!”
The fight was over a 421-a tax exemption. The program expired at the start of the year after the real estate industry wouldn’t give in to construction unions’ demands involving higher wages for workers.
Speyer reportedly asked if others in the room — a “who’s who of landlords and top executives” — wanted to try to work out a deal with the unions and reinstate the program.
Ross was not a fan of this idea.

After the meeting was adjourned, Speyer marched over to Ross, and as the pair began arguing, Ross jumped out of his seat.
“This isn’t the NFL,” screamed Ross, who owns the Miami Dolphins. “I’m not going to be pushed around.”

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said one eyewitness.
