"But the Dolphins look doomed, not unlike a trade the team nearly completed this summer. Just when the Dolphins were about to trade a fourth-round pick to the Broncos for quarterback Kyle Orton in August, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross declined to pay the three-year, $27 million extension that the quarterback and Miami already had agreed to, league sources said. When Ross declined to pay Orton, the deal blew up. Now Miami's season almost has."

its pretty clear at this point that ireland doesnt deserve the criticism that he has received, and ive been somewhat critical of the guy. its VERY clear that there have been several roster decisions made based on financial constraint over the past 2 years. there is only so much u can do through the draft in 1 year. ireland has only had control over personal decisions for one year. he had a good draft this year from early returns. if the guy doesnt have the ability to add free agents to fill roster spots, then its not really fair to judge his player acquisitions in the way we have.

so its very clear at this point the dolphins were NOT committed to winning this year, and its not surprising that the results have been as they are.

im not so sure its the wrong move for ross to be honest. perhaps it makes sense in order to build the foundation of this organization so that the next head coach isnt hamstrung by veteran contracts (like gruden was in tampa btw).

but this also means the jury is still out on ross, and it does bring some questions about our ownership to mind. IF this continues WHEN we have a new head coach then it is a SERIOUS problem.

i know Ross is going to get blasted for this, and i know we as fans want to win now, but if this is actually part of a PLAN it actually makes some sense - as long as its a blueprint for the future, and doesnt continue under the new regime.

Sorry ... but I won't blast Ross for this. I wouldn't pay Orton $9 million/year either. He did good to veto that trade, in my opinion.

I also translate Ross' moves as, "Work with what you have, save the draft picks for the new regime next year."

I never wanted Orton. I think everyone just wanted Henne less at the time.

I say +1 to Ross if this is true.

But I also think its not a good idea to hire a FO to run your team and then get in their way.

I agree.
To me Ross tightening up the purse string simply means that he is done with Sparano and maybe Ireland.
Ross tried and failed to get the coach he really wanted in Harbaugh. Without that he was forced to come back to Sparano. Since the lockout changed the dynamics of the offseason Peterson probably advised him to pull back and wait until a full offseason happened so they can get the guy they really want instead of change for the sake of change.
The reconciliation was an illusion and the extra year for Sparano was essentially a pay off for Sparano to return to the lame duck role.

We all felt that we were a decent Qb away from being an upper echelon team. I think we can all admit that is not true. In that sense I an happy he vetoed the trade. Perhaps Orton could have gotten a couple wins for us, but being an 8-8 and 9-7 team saddled with two Qb's that a new regime doesn't necessarily want makes no sense.

Sparano is definitely gone the only question remaining is will Ireland join him.

If true, it was a good move by Ross. We would still be 0-3 with Orton, and minus a 4th round pick.

If so then that's the first smart thing Ross has done..

You got all that from this article?

I don't buy that, because Denver's asking price was never lower than a second round pick.

I agree theres no way the Broncos were asking that little.

I can guarantee that theres alot to this story that no 1 hears about.

Also to the poster dont cut Ireland any slack because if this was true we woulda been over the cap with this move.Plus hes been horrible at bringing in FA's that do anything.Burnett,Dansby and Franchising Solai was a horrible move.

Kyle orton and henne are basically bringing the same results its a wash
kyle has 5 touchdowns 3 interceptions
henne has 4 touchdowns 3 interceptions
henne has 0 fumbles kyle has 2 fumbles

not much of an upgrade if any
