Ross vetoed trade for orton for 4th rnd pick

There's no way you can possibly defend this if true, and it has *nothing* to do with Orton's ability as a QB.

First of all, why in the hell would you eviscerate your FO like that? If you meddle once, you will meddle again. What happens when it's a move that could've improved the team dramatically? Now I don't know if the McKinnie situation was Ireland or Ross. Same with Carey. You're simply destroying whatever power the GM has, and it affects further negotiations down the road (I can picture agents telling Ireland "sorry we went elsewhere, but they didn't have to check with ownership first).

Second, what if it's not part of a plan? What if that's what we got: a tightwad owner? We're screwed, that's what.

Third, even if this is part of some plan, it's a crappy one. Suck for Luck? So people will flock after your crappy on purpose season? Because I wouldn't. And how would the players feel about wasting a year of their lives in your little project?or the coaches? Or your emasculated little GM?

No, speculation.

Ross has never shown signs of being cheap before.
He dumped money on Parcells simply to have him not run away.
He has always financed big free agent acquisitions/trades Dansby, Marshall.
He was ready to give Harbaugh an unprecedented salary if I recall.

and now when his GM says we can get this missing piece of are team for a 4th round pick as long as we keep the salary. He says no.
Why?
It would have boosted ticket sales.
Do you think it is because of some crazy loyalty to Henne?
Do you think he really covets that draft pick?
Why does he all of a sudden say no.
 
Don't believe it was only a fourth rd pick - I am glad we have Henne instead of Orton - grab a QB next year and demote Henne promote the new QB when ready
 
I'll be honest, I was one of the people rooting for an Orton trade, but after seeing this team it's pretty evident that even though Chad Henne has prevented us getting wins, but the rest of this team is not a winner either. I've enjoyed following Orton, but I'd rather us not waste draft picks on a QB who is not going to be the longterm solution.
 
It turned out to be a solid move because Henne at worst is just as good as Orton.

The problem with this story is that Ross is now starting to get into football decisions. He needs to stay out of them. We do not need another Daniel Snyder and Al Davis making decisions for the franchise when you have football people getting paid to make these decisions.

The 2nd problem is it's starting to look like Ross is treating this team more like a business than going out and trying to win. It's his right, but it's going to suck for the rest of us if he does this because owners that treat their teams like business's first rarely ever win.(Bengals,Clippers,etc..). He cut hours/pay for employees during the lockout to save money even though no games had been missed(and paid has been restored from what I believe), we were one the biggest non spenders in the NFL this year and now we get a report from Adam Schefter about Ross not wanting to pay for a QB. This isn't looking good

its pretty clear at this point that ireland doesnt deserve the criticism that he has received, and ive been somewhat critical of the guy. its VERY clear that there have been several roster decisions made based on financial constraint over the past 2 years. there is only so much u can do through the draft in 1 year. ireland has only had control over personal decisions for one year. he had a good draft this year from early returns. if the guy doesnt have the ability to add free agents to fill roster spots, then its not really fair to judge his player acquisitions in the way we have.

so its very clear at this point the dolphins were NOT committed to winning this year, and its not surprising that the results have been as they are.

im not so sure its the wrong move for ross to be honest. perhaps it makes sense in order to build the foundation of this organization so that the next head coach isnt hamstrung by veteran contracts (like gruden was in tampa btw).

but this also means the jury is still out on ross, and it does bring some questions about our ownership to mind. IF this continues WHEN we have a new head coach then it is a SERIOUS problem.

i know Ross is going to get blasted for this, and i know we as fans want to win now, but if this is actually part of a PLAN it actually makes some sense - as long as its a blueprint for the future, and doesnt continue under the new regime.

I think you have to at least consider the possibility that Carl Peterson has been advising Ross, and suggested he be careful to not let this regime leave the next one hamstrung in the event they are unsuccessful this year. I hope that is the case.

If reality is that we have a cheap owner who is more bottomline than about winning, this will be a long dark period in Dolphin history.
 
While i won't knock Ross's decision to VETO the trade, due to the amount of money involved ... I will start getting upset if Ross decides not to pay for his own players like; Langford, Wake, Soliai, Long, Davis and eventually Hartline and perhaps Henne too ... Orton might have made the team better in the short term, but could have cost the team a shot at perhaps Luck, Barkley or Jones? I am all for what Ross did in the interim for the better long term outlook of the team .. Time will tell, and now see Ireland might just have had the purse strings tightened by his boss ... so far the 2011 draft class looks outstanding in terms of how quickly many of the draftee's are contributing without a true off season of OTA'S !!!
 
Excellent move by Ross.

No way that useless piece of crap is worth 9 million per.

Saving the picks for the next regime. I like it.

Ireland deserves EVERY OUNCE of criticism AND THEN SOME... The reason that Denver and Orton could put our feet to the flame and ask for the moon was because IRELAND PUT HIMSELF (AND US) AT THE MERCY OF THE MARKET. We needed a QB FAR MORE than Denver needed to discard one, simply because our cupboard is/was bare...

Orton ain't all that... and the numbers began to ascend into truly MENTAL territory when we had ZERO leverage... The fact we were ready to sign Orton like he was Brady is ALL on JEFF 'QB ain't no big thang' Ireland.

Oh and here's the kicker... Henne is in a contract year... Yessir UFA IN 2012!!! BABOOM!!! Thanks Jeff!!! :bobdole:

And this is precisely the problem.

The veto on Orton may have been a smart move, but the fact that Ross can veto his football people at all is problematic, because the next time he may be vetoing a good decision.

Another reason why Parcells's position should've been filled immediately.
