Dolphins owner Steve Ross is pushing ahead with plans for a major modernization of Sun Life Stadium with the aim of putting South Florida in the running for the next availableSuper Bowl.Ross addressed fellow NFL owners Tuesday in Atlanta about his plan to pay for $350 million-$400 million of stadium renovations without seeking public funding, as he announced earlier this year.
To escalate the process, Ross is backing off on his request for relief from annual property taxes totaling about $4 million, according to a source with the team.

"I have made clear I want the stadium modernized because it's right for our fans and it's right for Miami-Dade and South Florida. I have decided the best way to get this done is to pay for the project with private funds. All we ask in return is that we are treated the same as all franchises in the state of Florida. A world-class city needs a world-class stadium," Ross said in March.

Like him or hate him Ross wants the best for this team.

Still puzzled as to why people hate on the guy so much. He isn't on the field failing to develop players, missing a pass, dropping a ball, or missing a tackle. However, when all those things happen, blame reflects back on him as one of the fall guys. I'm glad he (and his money :d-day: ) is a part of my team.

No he doesn't. The best for this team is a new stadium, not a bull**** worthless patch. It's clear by now he has no intention of pushing for one so the proper stance is to oppose everything he wants to do and wait for new ownership.

Dolphins fans deserve better than this half witted dip**** gargoyle.

Jeffrery Loria is the reason that the Dolphins will not build a new stadium anytime soon. NOT Stephen Ross.

Bull****. First off, Ross had a chance to get a new stadium well before Loria pooped in the well. Obviously the situation was ripe to take advantage of, but he never showed any interest. And he still doesn't. That's his fault.

Meanwhile the poop being in the well hasn't stopped David Beckham is charging ahead with his plan to build a soccer stadium downtown. He's hitting his fair share of roadblocks, but at least he's got the right idea.

Actually, Beckham pulled out, he isn't pursuing that anymore. (Edit: Nevermind, I was wrong :) )

However, give me an example of all the NFL owners who paid 100% of their renovation fees.

Marlins deal was in the works years before he even bought the team, no way he had a chance to get a new stadium before Loria (they literally started building the stadium a couple months after he bought the team). This is the same deal that got then mayor Alvarez recalled and ousted a year later.

Face it, unless he puts down the billion or so dollars it takes to build a stadium himself, he isn't going to get one done in Miami anytime soon. No one is.

I don't care if Ross is willing to work in a salt mine so he can pay to replace every seat in the stadium with a throne of gold and alabaster. It's the wrong thing to do, and if he succeeds in renovating it's just going to doom us to be in that crappy stadium and it's crappy location until I'm too old to remember my own name. The fact that he didn't take any taxpayer money to hurt the team -- and by extension, all Dolphins fans everywhere -- is no consolation.

Not really. Deals had been floated and fallen apart for years, but it wasn't until 2007 that the Hurricanes even announced they were leaving, giving the Marlins a site to build a ballpark. The initial financing deal for the stadium was passed the month Ross purchased half the team (Feb 2008), but the final deal to fund the stadium wasn't passed for another year and it nearly fell apart several times (all that had happened by them was the Orange Bowl being demolished).

If Ross had been aggressive in that time frame he could have swooped in and offered the city a better deal, but from day one he has always stated that he felt like the stadium was an asset, not a burden. I've never heard him say once that he wished we could get a new stadium in a better location.

No, Ross is just the guy hiring the coaches who fail to develop players and the guy who pays the general managers who acquire horrific players who drop the ball and miss tackles. Nothing happens in a vacuum, one things leads to another. Ross extending Tony Sparano's contract directly lead to a 6-10 season. Ross twice extending Jeff Ireland's contract directly lead to our mediocre roster.

Year after year Ross proves how inept he is as an owner. Not only do we keep losing(we keep losing and Ross keeps the people responsible for said losing in place, leading to future losses), but he has an absolute knack for shooting himself in the foot. If hes not flying cross country to pick up Harbaugh, hes promising to run Super PAC campaigns against those dastardly Florida politicians. If he isnt lambasting Tony Sparano on the airwaves, hes running a GM search so poorly that candidates are pulling out because they have no idea what the job actually is(or whatever the hell happened this offseason).

Ross isnt Daniel Synder or Jerry Jones, but hes not much better than them either. The days of "horrifically involved" owners are largely over. Most of those who proudly wore that title have died. If your going to applaud the fact that we have the 27th or 28th "best" owner in the league, then i hope i dont see you criticizing the fact that we have the 27th or 28th "best" linebacker in the league. Because, again, one directly leads to the other.

Moving on, while im no fan of the leagues practice of privatizing profits but socializing costs, im realistic enough to know a deal is going to happen eventually. Because of that im with Walrus on wanting a new stadium. If we are going to get screwed over, then we might as well get the best deal possible. Slapping a fresh coat of paint on a Ford Pinto that has already caught on fire is not the best deal possible. And, on top of all his other incompetence, Ross has shown absolutely no interest in building a new stadium. Keep slapping him down Miami, hopefully the next owner will be more interested in doing what is right for this franchise instead of doing what is right for his ego.

So the same posters who are against public funding of a stadium are also supporters of building a new stadium, yet no new stadium has recently been built without public funding. Sounds like the new stadium groupies will be complaining no matter what happens....:m359:

I applaud his stadium efforts. Actually I suggested he do what he is doing a while back, so good for him. However, it's not a mystery why fans are frustrated with him. He handled Sporano terribly. Should have cleaned house (Ireland) when he got rid of Sporano. Forced Philbin on Ireland (who wanted McCoy). Like I said, it's not a mystery.

The stone cold junkie Irsay, a golden-spooned legacy inheritor of his daddy's team, currently with several felony and serious possession charges pending (and supposedly going through the rehab charade), unbelievably was allowed to pitch Lucas Stadium at the owners meeting for SB consideration. Oh did I say Lucas Stadium? here ya go:

In December 2004, the Colts and the City of Indianapolis agreed to construct a new $720 million stadium for the team. The Colts paid $100 million of the total cost and the remaining funding came from the State of Indiana and the City of Indianapolis through increased taxes on food and beverages. On September 20, 2005 construction began on the stadium, adjacent to the Colts former home, the RCA Dome. In March 2006, Lucas Oil Products bought the naming rights to the stadium for $120 million over 20 years. - See more at: http://www.stadiumsofprofootball.com/afc/LucasOilStadium.htm#sthash.Y1j4H5YL.dpuf

But it's Ross and almost only Ross who should bear the financial brunt of a new stadium? yeah right

I'd be willing to support partial public funding for a new stadium. Not a patch which is just going to make it more likely the Dolphins are in their current stadium longer. Not sure what's so complicated about this.
