Roster Question

well we obviously have to cut about half of them.... I think it is rediculous that the nfl has a limit of just 53 players.... Football players are constantly hurt. The roster limit should be around 60 players.... While we are on this subject, why can you only activate a certain amount of players for games for the 53 man roster.

The Nfl allowes only 53 man in the roster, but we have SIGNED more than 90 (I counted 92) what will have to proceed?

Final roster the week before the season has to have only 53. We can have a lot more at this point, and as training camp goes on there are certain cut down days.

OK, but what happen with the players we cut?, they have a contract, because we SIGNED them, we just tell them "your contract is not valid now?" or what happens with them?...

Yeah, a lot of the UDFA and all that we cut just lose everthing. However, if we cut some of our players we have signed to multi-year contracts, they still will earn some money even though they are not on the team.

Once the new league year begins each year, the roster maximum is 80 players, until the two cut down dates towards the end of camp (to 65 then 53).

In addition to the 80 player maximum, players allocated to NFL Europe receive roster exemptions that last until near the end of the camp (not sure of the exact date). Hence teams can have more than 80 players on their offseason roster.

Now what can happen is that teams are reported as agreeing to terms with players, but they dont actually sign the deal until a roster move is made at a later date to free up a spot. I'm also not 100% certain that our draftees count yet as they are not under contract. Some combination of these factors would probably allow for the 4 or 5 spots we're over (counting the 80 spots plus our NFL Europe contingent).

The NFLE guys will likely stay on the roster through the final cuts due to the exemption. I do have one question. The 80 limit starts now or at the beginning of training camp in July? Not real clear on that.

Its already active. Basically the 53 man limit lasts during the regular season till the official start of the new league year. The roster limit then rises to 80 (plus any exemptions), and the new salary cap figure activates. The 80 player limit lasts till the first cutdown date towards the end of camp.

The roster limit for SIGNED players is 80 plus exemptions. We now have 80 under contract plus six in NFLE. The six draft picks have not yet signed so they don't count and won't until they sign contracts just before camp. For now they are practicing under injury waivers which guarentees them a certain amount based on the salary of the player drafted in their spot last year plus some agreed upon inflationary increase. That way if they get injured before a contract is signed they are protected.

What happens if they get cut? They get nothing. NFL contracts are not guarenteed. Only their bonus and in the event of certain stars some other monies are ensured. If you get cut, your contract goes out the window. This is not MLB or the NBA where all money is guarenteed the minute you sign. Football is not just a tough game its a tough business.
