John Denney is just about the longest serving Dolphin on the team. He has a reputation of doing his job with a minimum of fuss and not screwing up and is probably regarded one of the best long snappers in the NFL. However, roster spots are at a premium and I respectfully ask the question whether another established player could perform the long snapper duties in addition to his other tasks.
Do all teams have long snappers who just specialize in the task of snapping or do some of them play other positions as well?

Most teams have a reserved spot for just the long snapper. it's a must and it takes skill. Denney also plays a good bit of special teams.

when you have a chance to say you have "one of the best in the NFL" on your team. you keep him. Especially when he does what is asked.

Why does this thread pop up every offseason?

In reality, every team has a dedicated LS. However, every snapper has a secondary position that they played in college which is sometimes put to use in the pros (oftentimes the LS may also be a 3rd or 4th TE, or a reserve C). But the fact of the matter is, they make the team based on the fact that they are the best snapper available. Teams don't keep a guy who may be one of the better snappers around just because he might come in handy in other limited circumstances. They keep the guy who is the best snapper, period. And in our case that is certainly Denney. He's a lock.

Sorry, double post.
