Roth was drafted by Nick Saban in 2005 with a second round pick obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs in the Patrick Surtain trade, one of Saban's ill-advised moves. Almost from the start, Roth's shortcomings as a DE from a technique and talent perspective were evident. While his technique would improve, his high motor wasn't enough to compensate for his overall lack of talent.
Roth languished at DE for three seasons, and it was clear during the miserable 1-15 season in 2007 that Saban's pick was a bonafide bust.
Then the Bill Parcells regime came to Miami and, in an attempt to salvage Roth's career, moved him to OLB. The argument was that he would dominate there versus the run, especially one-on-one with tight ends.
This approach did net some positive returns last season (53 tackles, 5 sacks). But behind this façade was the reality of Roth's limitations defending the pass. The guy was too slow of foot and simply couldn't cover running backs and other receivers in the flats and hook zones, especially to the wide side of the field. Defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni adjusted coverages to try and help hide Roth's limitations; this worked to a degree. But, quite frankly, on a more talented roster, Roth wouldn't have made the cut.
