Does anyone know whether Roth will line up as an OLB in 3-4 situatoins, or will he remain a DE even in the 3-4 packages? I know he played LB his first year at Iowa. But he's bulked up to 280 lbs now. anyone know how Saban plans to use him?

I think he'd play him at OLB in a 3-4 defense. Holliday, Carter, and Vickerson are the 3-4 DEs...

he'll probably be one of hose hybrid types like vrabel, but of course he eventually will be better :)

I think it is likely he will be a 4-3 DE/ 3-4 OLB. He doesnt really have the size to fit in the same roles as guys like Holliday, Carter, etc.

He has the physical skill to play a 3-4 OLB, imo. He has tenacity and good pursuit/tackling skills, which are a must. His speed is acceptable for a 3-4 OLB, there are plenty of guys out there like Terrell Suggs and Rosevelt Colvin who are slower then 4.77.

Here's what Saban said:

"He has a rare combination for his size of being able to play with some power but still being able to be an effective pass rusher, which I think is always an asset for any down lineman defensive player.â€Â

and,

(On where he thinks Matt Roth can play) – “We really think that he’s a defensive end, but he could play what we call our OE end as well. But we also think he can play five-technique over tackle and has a little versatility in both those positions, especially since he can pass rush.â€Â

Sounds like he's looking at him as a DE in both a 4-3 and potentially a 3-4 position.

I'm sure if he shows the ability to play in space and the ability to speed rush from a standup position, they'll put him in that kind of spot.

Yeah, he'll end up on the Dline and I think he might see some action on third and long...

Nick will have a similar alignment with his defensive line.

The OE end, or open side end, is the end that will play on the weak side. For this discussion, Nick believes that Matt can play this position. This position will be held by Jason Taylor though, and this is the position that will likely stand up when the team shifts to the odd front.

I believe the difference between the way Jason played this position previously and the way he will be asked to play it now is the difference between a "loose" 5 technique and a regular 5 technique. In a loose 5 technique, Jason lined up wide to the left tackles outside shoulder. In the five technique, he will be closer to the outside shoulder.

The tackle on the open side will play a 3 techinque, which is on the outside shoulder of the weak side guard. This puts the end and tackle close together, but it opens up lots of possibilities for stunts, which you will see a lot of from Nick Saban's defense. This tackle will likely be Kevin Carter and Vonnie Holliday with Kevin Vickerson learning this position.

The tight side tackle will play a 1 technique, which is essentially a nose guard. The 1 is on the shoulder of the center, obviously on the opposite side of the open side. This tackle will be Larry Chester and Tim Bowens. Their biggest responsibility will be to tie up the center and the guard and open up things for the MLB, who will be stacked behind him.

The tight side end will play a 5 technique on the outside shoulder of the tackle, putting him between the tackle and the tight end. This is this player's gap responsibility, and this is a position that Nick feels Matt Roth can play as well due to the power he plays with. This is the position Marcus Spears played for Nick Saban while at LSU. This guy may have to take on double teams in run situations which will open up the strong side backer for the tackle. This player will be Vonnie Holliday, Kevin Carter, and Matt Roth in some rotation.

I don't care where they put him. This guy has a bonafide mean streak from the sounds of things. We need some nastiness and electricity in our defense. This guy brings that to the table. I think he will be an asset and future core player for this 'D'.

Thanks for the read.

KB, you think Vickerson can hold up at the 1 at all? Most of last year Zgonina played the 1 technique with Robinson primarily playing 3. If Timbo and Larry do not hold up physically, we could still be in trouble in that spot if Vickerson can't play there. Nothing against Jeff but I just don't love him at that spot.

I don't think he fits that position well.

This roth guy is going to signal in a new mean aggressive type of defense we havn't seen in a long time. The junkyard dog type of defense. He kind of reminds me of bill romanoski on steriods type of player. He wants to hurt not just beat the other team. I am excited not to have this guy on another team facing us. Someone covering the draft compared him to howie long and after reading and watching some film I agree. Howie long type of player without his riddlin.

If Dan Quinn can make a player out of Mario Monds, he would be perfect for the 1 technique
