Nick will have a similar alignment with his defensive line.
The OE end, or open side end, is the end that will play on the weak side. For this discussion, Nick believes that Matt can play this position. This position will be held by Jason Taylor though, and this is the position that will likely stand up when the team shifts to the odd front.
I believe the difference between the way Jason played this position previously and the way he will be asked to play it now is the difference between a "loose" 5 technique and a regular 5 technique. In a loose 5 technique, Jason lined up wide to the left tackles outside shoulder. In the five technique, he will be closer to the outside shoulder.
The tackle on the open side will play a 3 techinque, which is on the outside shoulder of the weak side guard. This puts the end and tackle close together, but it opens up lots of possibilities for stunts, which you will see a lot of from Nick Saban's defense. This tackle will likely be Kevin Carter and Vonnie Holliday with Kevin Vickerson learning this position.
The tight side tackle will play a 1 technique, which is essentially a nose guard. The 1 is on the shoulder of the center, obviously on the opposite side of the open side. This tackle will be Larry Chester and Tim Bowens. Their biggest responsibility will be to tie up the center and the guard and open up things for the MLB, who will be stacked behind him.
The tight side end will play a 5 technique on the outside shoulder of the tackle, putting him between the tackle and the tight end. This is this player's gap responsibility, and this is a position that Nick feels Matt Roth can play as well due to the power he plays with. This is the position Marcus Spears played for Nick Saban while at LSU. This guy may have to take on double teams in run situations which will open up the strong side backer for the tackle. This player will be Vonnie Holliday, Kevin Carter, and Matt Roth in some rotation.
