I was pretty sure throughout the entire training camp that the battle to replace Jason Taylor on the outside was between Quentin Moses and Charlie Anderson. But now Roth has started the last 2 games at OLB for us and continues to practice there. Is he our new starter at OLB opposite Joey Porter?

I think it's asinine to have Roth playing OLB. He bulked up to 285 and simply does not have the athleticism for the OLB position. It's pretty stupid to think he's going to be able to do any pass coverage stuff.

Is he any good as a OLB? And didnt he get a sack on saturdays game?

Your right about that but i think that what they are trying to do is get as many good players on defense as they can. If you can get a guy like Roth out there as well they should.

Yes, but what he will lack in pass coverage ability, I believe he can more than make up with his run-stopping ability. With him at OLB, we will be nearly impossible to run on IMO, when you replace him at DE (which is where he was starting originally) with a 290 pounder like Merling, Langford, or Starks, it gives us big time run-stuffing ability with all the extra muscle out there. And to dog on him for his deficiences as a pass rusher, you have to assume we have someone more capable in that area behind him, and with only Charlie Anderson and Quentin Moses as the other options, I don't believe we really do. So why not!?

I think roth will be good at OLB mybe not in the pass coverage but at run stopping and rushing the qb.

OLBs in a 3-4 are not meant to cover, they're meant to blitz and stop the run. Mostly. They shouldn't be in coverage enough to consistently be picked on.

Dont like Roth there at all. He looked totally at sea against the Jags in pass coverage and I think that is something we will be seeing alot this season.

The idea does not seem sexy, but it has worked the last two games. Our starting defense played really good against Tampa, and Roth got a sack. He has been providing constant pressure, so we will see. I thnk we are not expecting anything from him at the position and we might get a little surpise. Yes he bulked up, but I would not be surprise if he has lost most of the weight at camp already. Greg Ellis who plays the same position in Dallas and was a DE is 265. I would not be surpised if ROth actually works at OLB. Roth was a 2nd round pick and this just might be his breakout year.

i think they are still experimenting and since anderson is out with a hamstring injury they have that option to just play around with different packages to see if he would be a fit. When anderson comes back from injury i'm sure they'll rotate him back into DE. but for now he's not bad at OLB and as long as we keep winning games i don't care if you put him as SS or FS.
