Roth’s days as a Dolphin are numbered

Like you said, not exactly breaking news, but I think you've got it down right. Roth just doesn't have the size to play DE in our 3-4 scheme (even if we don't play a true 3-4 scheme this year, we will have one set up in the not so distant future) and I really can't picture him as a stand up linebacker in the 3-4. That combined with the fact the FO that drafted him is gone, and this FO has shown they only want the guys they want to bring in, he's a goner. I'm predicting a June 1st (I got the date right, right?) cut.

Seeing Roth getting stonewalled against the Redskins by a tight end a couple of times in the opener last year did it for me, I think he's a short timer with this regime.

I can't wait till we cut Roth, just to see the "SIGN MATT ROTH" threads started by every bozo that thinks we should sign every castoff out there.

I read something like that and then I read something like this:

Q: With the Dolphins adding Randy Starks and drafting two DEs fairly high for the 3-4, will Matt Roth be moved to OLB? It seems we need more depth there and he did play OLB early on at Iowa.

A: No, Rudy. The Dolphins actually like Roth at defensive end, and I'm thinking he'll be a likely starter on the left side. Roth fits this 3-4 system a bit better than last year's system, mostly because he has the motor that works well in this scheme. He doesn't have elite size, and his arm length is still an issue, but from what I understand, this team believes his energy and work ethic will help him compensate for the other set backs. We'll see. I'm not sold on Roth just yet, but I was impressed with his off-season training last year. Given this year's program is even more intense, there's a chance he could come back this season even bigger, stronger and faster than any of us anticipate.

And then I say, well, there certainly are mixed opinions. I think the article that started this thread might be a little premature, which is not uncommon from what I have read all off-season.

I think we'd all prefer that scenario over the latter!

ive always liked Matt Roth. i saw him against Detroit a year or two ago and he did really well, he was always in the backfield making a play. while i DONT think Matt Roth will be an every down player, i do think he is the kinda guy you can send in on one or two downs and make a good play. like all players, he has his poor games....but he seems like a guy who u can send in for a few plays, or on pass rush, and he can do just fine.

u can never have enough DL

Another good article Hugo. Thanks.

One suggestion though, it is probably fair to note that he was playing with an injury most of last season and Traylor played even less plays last year than before, and he wasn't rotating with Carter either. Those 3 factors contributed to his subpar performance last season. Either way, I think your article is spot on, he has no future in the 34 and the only question is whether we can get anything via trade or whether we'll have to let him go for nothing. It's a shame, because he's a good kid despite getting into a fight. He's not an egomaniac or a troublemaker or a locker room cancer. He just puts on his helmet and plays ... but he's not a fit for the new system.

The previous regieme Roth was drafted by was Saban's who is in the Parcells/Bellchick tree. Could someone please explain the difference in defense Saban was trying to impliment and the one Parcells wants to use so I can understand why Roth would fit Saban's system and not Parcells'

Good point, Digital, although I didn't want to make excuses for the guy since his entire body of work has been sub par overall (injuries or not). Point taken, though.

And as for Darlington, I like him for the most part, but I think it's a stretch to believe that Roth will be the starting defensive end when we've got several more talented and more physically prototypical guys waiting in the wings.

he will more than likely be gone. trading him is not gonna be fun since he only got 3 sacks as a starting DE last year. too bad, i thought he was gonna be productive.

I think its more of a wait and see what happens during this off-season with Roth. Roth knows he is on the bubble and has to really come on this year. Much has been said about Parcells liking bigger linebackers, and I recall Dat Nguyen still being a starter for the Cowboys when Parcells became headcoach despite being a smaller sized linebacker. So there are exceptions to the rule sometimes. Thanks to Lee2000 for the post above noting the Jeff Darlington comment.

you sure Darlington answered that question a few days a go and not a year ago?
He's not too quick with the replys.
