The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released stalwart defensive player Sam Eguavoen so the Texan can pursue a stint with a NFL club.

The Roughriders announced the news Wednesday afternoon.

The linebacker reportedly worked out with more than a half-dozen NFL teams in December, including the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals.

I’m high On taking chances on CFL players. I was high on Wake when everyone called him a bum cause he played in Canada.

Always wondered about OLinemen too. Is it possible that the best OLineman in Canada just isn’t good enough for our team? Are we that good??? I mean..Weird...

you might be on to something with o-linemen. There are 7 billion people on this earth.......hard to believe we can't find a better guard than Larsen.

If you want a take from a local Roughrider fan who also happens to be a Dolphins fan it is that Eguavoen is very unlikely to make a Wake type impact but could Eguavoen could still be worth looking at to play a role for Miami. Wake was on a whole different level in the CFL as the dude had almost as many sacks as a couple teams his last year here. As for offensive line it'll likely never happen that you find a spare OL in the CFL. The CFL has rules to ensure that a certain percentage of starters are Canadian but that rule has caused teams to basically just always field their OL, S, and Kicker spots as Canadians making for a much more limited and less talented pool at those positions for the NFL to try to steal.

Bring him in. I would keep expectations low but it would be great if he could be a solid backup?

IIR, wasn’t Guard Mark Dixon a CFL player before NFL?

Yes, he was. Three years in the CFL before signed by Miami. There are pearls in oysters everywhere but you usually have to do a lot of shucking to find one.

Regarding Eguavoen, haven't watched a lot of him, but he is a typical CFL LB in many respects. High motor, good lateral movement, great tackler, and can also play specials. He's also instinctive (something our last CFL LB recruit, Deon Lacey, really wasn't). Big issue though (as with most CFL LB's) is size. He's great in the open field, big gap CFL. but playing in a phone booth against guys 100 lbs heavier than you are is a different thing entirely. I can't think of anyone other than Jerrell Freeman who made the transition successfully.

would seem worthy of a look...

I bet Ireland checks him out!

I should also mention that Eguavoen already worked out with 6 NFL teams and we weren't one of them, so he's not coming here. Also, Jameer Thurman (who I think is the better LB) was released by Calgary Stampeders this morning. But he was already worked out by 8 NFL teams (again not by us) and is expected to sign with the Bears. The bottomline is that the market is pretty hot right now for CFLers, but we seem to be too distracted with other matters (admittedly more pressing ones) to care...
