This is a bit infuriating to me, maybe earned but forfeited is a better expression.

It’s no surprise that the NFLPA has filed a grievance for $82,000 in workout bonuses earned by tight end Aaron Hernandez before the Patriots cut him. The money was earned, and it should be paid.

But the Patriots, as we explained back in June, won’t be inclined to willingly pay Hernandez another penny. Instead, they’ll force him to fight for the money that he’s due to receive.

The money should be held in trust until a verdict is rendered in which case if he is found innocent he gets paid, if he is found guilty the victims family gets paid.

Although you are correct in that it is what should happen, I don't think they have the legal grounds to withhold payment if he earned that money before his contract was terminated.

innocent or guilty if he is owed money he should be paid it, you dont follow an agreed contract only as long as you like the guy.
