Rounds 1-3 Draft Grades

I think all that trading down was ridiculous when we moved back up anyway, for a guard who will play in 2015. When we were collecting extra picks like m&m's, I thought, well he's going the quantity route. But we started the draft with 1 pick in each of the first four rounds and that is where we ended up. I'm no draft guru but that kind of tells me they weren't exactly wizards at this.

Let's see what we get with that 5th rounder and if he makes the team.

I don't agree with the overall graft grade though, because you have to grade the players, not just the maneuvering. We have a solid RT that best case scenario, will anchor our line for years, and we added a weapon for Tannehill. That's a B.

Actually what I think happened with all the trade movement is this: The Dolphins traded back twice in the second round with Turner as the intended target but when it was their turn to make the pick they were shocked that Landry was still on the board and he was rated higher than Miller so they took him at that pick. Then they moved way up in the third round because Miller was their intended target when they traded down originally. So in their mind, they got two players that they valued.

Stopped reading after the C+ grade for the 1st round pick then the explanation of why round 2 was a B+- total contradiction.

Stopped reading after seeing that you said you stopped reading. lol

I see see this posted by others here as well, and think it's silly that anyone would stop reading because of one thing they don't agree with. JMO

I don't care what any armchair GM says, no one knows that James would have been available later.
Hickey had a first round grade on him, we heard that 2 weeks ago. Can't blame the guy for sticking to his board and filling the biggest hole on the roster

I have to believe that Benton has big time input on the linemen being taken and likes what he sees enough to think he can turn them into players.

great post. I was very critical of the Ireland trading up and down and gaining and losing picks with no rhyme or reason. It seems Hickey has the same problem.

Hickey's done an admirable job of addressing the oline. We went all out for a safe bet, high level player at LT. We made a number of savvy questionable yet potentially high reward vet pickups. And then addressed the hell out of what was left to address with 2 of our top 3 picks. Job well done at addressing the oline. We have youth and depth. So from that standpoint I think we accomplished a goal with this draft. The problem is, do I think we were just an oline away from being a serious threat in the league? Hell no. We need players. Elite players to build a team around. We didn't really make any moves towards approaching that. We have no talent or leadership at LB which I find critical to a great defense. Safety is very iffy. Our QB isn't a sure thing and we'd probably be wise to hedge our bets a bit there. RB is uninspiring. We lack players to build a team around. Going for the truly special player is what I would have liked to see Hickey pursue instead of merely patching a huge hole Ireland left us.

Lets see….

O line had major issues….addressed with two quality guys who will start week one.

Team needed leader and some toughness….added the toughest skill guy in the draft and three guy who were team captions.

I give the draft an A…can't see an issue with any picked, moved back for a WR who I think will end up being a huge steal and have a better overall career then his former Teammate taken in round 1. Ju'Wuan James was a need pick, but one that should start from week one and play a long time. Durable and played well against elite competition his entire career….SEC DE's are no joke. Finally the moved up to take one of the more versatile guys left on the o-line, one who is very driven o prove he belongs and has athleticism out the ass for the position…will play well inside and should kick outside when Albert gets hurt or the team is ready to move on.

Smart drafting….

For me:

Positives:
Landry, great pick at decent value, obviously did their homework on the 4.7 combine 40 and weren't put off.
Great drafting down in that 2nd round to pick up extra 4th and 5th.

Negatives:
Reach at #19, although a good player who fills a need, we got zero value, because he would have been there at other places in the draft, failing that other players could have been picked up at 50. The seeds of this reach were sown back in FA when we failed to bring in another tackle to put is in a BPA drafting position in round 1.
Not taking trade down in round 1, to give up a 3rd round pick in all essence for no good reason, was a bad start for Hickey.
Trading up for Turner and giving up a 4th. Would he still been there when we would have picked in the 3rd ? I think so, could be wrong, but not sure he was worth giving up that 4th in this deep draft.

Overall grade C-
I just can't look past the 1st round pick, the double trade down in 2nd was great but the lack of trade down in 1 and the trade up in 3, left me feeling empty.

Agree completely with your analysis but not the grades.
Even though James was a reach, he at least deserves a B for being the best RT in the draft.
I'm ok with Landry's grade mostly because we could have had Allen Robinson.
A lot of pundits think Turner was our best pick and he actually did well at the Senior Bowl. B
James was the best RT only because all the good tackles play on the left. It means he wasn't even the best tackle on his own team. Definitely not the best player drafted that can play RT in the NFL. Kind of a play on words, that doesn't improve his ability.
And Turner has a chance to be a player, but he certainly did NOT have a good Senior Bowl. He was used by players all day.

Wanna bet on that ??

Round 1- C- Player of need, but huge reach. A lot of people saw him as a third rounder, behind guys like Moses who went late second.

Round 2- D- I hate this pick. We did not need to use a second rounder to replace a good player like Gibson. Nonathletic over producer in college who played with a great qb and on the other side of a great wr.

Round 3- C- I like the player and like that he is ok moving to guard... however, there was a great natural guard/center available who went a few picks later to San Francisco (ie he will be great). Instead of picking a guy to change positions, pick the guy who has played there and played there well before against actual competition.

As a school teacher, how is it you have two C+ and one B- and come up with an overall average of C? I give the draft a B for 1-3. Addressed needs along the oline and got a decent playmaker.

blind fanboy. Truly!

The grading of draft picks is stupid.

This draft was about prouction, character, and attitude.

They pinpointed guys. Its that simple.

Philbin is not one to start rookies so all this talk of Hartline and Matthews on the outs is crap. The rookies are gonna get worked into the rotation over the next few years as guys leave. Same with the TE, He is just keeping the lines for the future stocked.

provided Philbin and Hickey have a future by making the playoffs.
