This went unnoticed in Winderman's Sunday column....

I think Ruben Patterson would be a very interesting addition...he can be that defender we could use for guys like Billups and Hamilton.

MENTIONING MIAMI: Trail Blazers forward Ruben Patterson not only thinks Portland should make a trade but also has a destination in mind for himself. Of Thursday's impending trading deadline, the 30-year-old defensive specialist said, "The team needs to make a deal. There are a lot of guys who are unhappy here." The 6-foot-5 veteran then enlisted for a trip to the Heat. "They need a defender," he said. "If I went there, they would see a new Ruben Patterson. Ah man, that would be lovely. They could use me." Portland is overloaded at small forward, with Patterson, Darius Miles, Travis Outlaw, Viktor Khryapa and Sergei Monia. Patterson earns $6.3 million this season, with a player option for $6.8 million next season. In exchange, the Blazers are seeking depth at power forward and a shooter with height.

Riley said in today's Sun Sentinel...he doesn't see it happening. He knows what he can get out of this team when they play at their top level.

Well...maybe he doesn't want to show his hand...

But Patterson is a top notch defender capable of lock down performances ala Bruce Bowen.

Riley would say, yeah we are interested If they were. I doubt we see a trade. We haven't even heards talk of a trade. Isn't the deadline tommorow?

Uh, what do we give up? Doleac? Wright (waaaay overpaying)? Simien (ditto). Fact of the matter is this roster is pretty set except for subtle, subtle moves.

I'd love Patterson but the only way you can match up salaries is if Posey or Walker is in the deal, and obviously thats not happening. The only way he gets on the Heat roster is if he talks his way into a buyout, which is unlikely.

The deal can happen with Doleac and a 1st round pick as per Ira Winderman on with fat hank.

Unfortunately hes an idiot. He needs to read the rules on how trade exceptions can be used.

Explain.

Does Ruben Patterson make that much? Doesn't he fit with Doleac's salary?

Salaries must be within 125%. Ruben pulls in $6,353,200, and Doleac $2,640,000. The Heat does have a 1.9 mil trade exception it got during the Malik Allen trade. But a trade exception cannot be used in addition to a players salary to trade for a larger salary. It can only be used to aquire a player who makes 2 mil or less.
