New Rules/Proposals Passed/Updates

Goalposts extended five feet higher in the air. Designed to eliminate controversial situations like the Justin Tucker kick that put the Ravens over the Patriots in 2012 and make field goals easier to judge. A no-brainer that passed with a 32-0 vote.

Recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is now a reviewable play. Known as the NaVorro Bowman Rule because of his recovery -- and the ensuing lack of replay which led to Seattle keeping the ball -- during the Seahawks-49ers NFC Championship Game, this is another no-brainer. There's nothing worse than plays that aren't reviewable.

During replay review, the referee will consult (via audio we presume) with members of the NFL's Officiating Department in New York. Conspiracy theorists might be up in arms, but you need an objective set of eyes (or six objective sets) making sure the right call is made. "We expect it to speed up the process and be more efficient for us," VP of Officiating Dean Blandino said.

Outside of two minutes, the game clock will continue following a quarterback sacks. Makes sense and will speed up games.

Roll-up block protection was increased to include the side.

Dunking on goal posts is as legal as gambling at Bushwood, sir.

I agree with most of the changes, but really like the NaVarro Bowman Rule. I thought at the time it happened it should have been the 49er's ball. Bowman getting hurt made it double bad for them. Two of the rules that were tabled should have been passed in my opinion, the one with more cameras and the one about no overtime in preseason.

Eventually they'll make an official 'Patriots rule', where it'll be a 15 yard penalty to score against New England.

How about the "batting" of a ball forward while trying to recover a quarterback fumble... is that review-able? :)

25 yard XPT will be in testing phase during pre season.

Sounds to me if it's recovered by the defense it would be reviewable, and maybe if recovered by the offense.

The calling new york thing (555-4444 cawfee tawk) will bring upon the league many issues - like issues with the phone lines...

The NFL has issues.... You do not need to send it to NY - just send an extra team to each game...Put them in a box at the stadium.

They should put lasers on top of the posts shooting straight up / another electronic monitoring device to determine if the kick is good or not. It's pretty measurable if they put the technology to work.

25 yards is too much for extra point. 10 yards I can see. They should also make this change: 3 point field goal for anything 39 yards and below. 4 point field goal for 40-49 yards. 5 point field goal for 50-59 yards. 6 points for 60-69 yards.

Well if you can dunk on a 15ft field goal you shouldn't get a flag.

I'm not a fan of moving the FGs up. Might be ok for NFL players but it will drastically change the high school game. Those kids need to be practicing on the same things college and nfl kickers will be using. Also, kiss the 55 yard FG for the win goodbye.

Who cares if its automatic to kick an extra point? Not every part of the game needs to be a quest into Mordor

I don't think they plan on raising the actual crossbar 5 feet, just extending the uprights five more feet into the air. The crossbar would stay at its current elevation. That's how i understand the rule. maybe i'm wrong???

"I think there's a tremendous amount of interest in this, possibly even to the point of support," Goodell said. "But there also are things we still want to make sure we do right. We've been very incremental in trying to do this, but we
believe competitively it could make even the races toward the end of the season even more exciting, with more teams vying for playoff positions, which is great for our fans.

This is one thing I'm against, I am not for an expanded playoff format. This would lessen the value of making the playoffs, mediocre teams would get in. Teams that are 7-9, 8-8, don't deserve to be in the playoffs. If the Dolphins had made the playoffs last year after losing two in a row to finish 8-8, my reaction would have been, so what? What have they done?

Ok, good. I guess I misunderstood.

Patience my young Padawan, Brady cannot play forever.
