RUN-STOP %: Praise Martin-Oguikwe better than Hassan Reddick

Charles Harris also made that list at #25 (run stop percentage of 3-4LBs that played 50% of defensive run snaps)

People need to stop worrying about what the pats do.

He's also extremely good at stripping the ball when he makes a tackle or sack. I like him!

Well if he's better than Reddick, why didn't we or any other team draft him? Yes, the forced fumbles were incredible but the danger in getting too carried away by the highlights is not seeing all the poor plays, as well. (Not my first rodeo, I watched the Tavon Austin highlights video and then expected him to be an NFL champion and I'm not holding my breath). In the season of wacky first names, Praise gets to show what he can do at training camp and I will be interested to see if he can impress.

Agreed. I can make Dallas Thomas look All-Pro if I get to pick the highlights (though not very many). OTOH, this, to me, speaks volumes - "16 teams trying to sign him." It's not as if Miami was alone in seeing talent.

That would be the worlds shortest highlight video

Dallas Thomas video would have to be college film ......wouldn't show any clips in a Dolphin uniform unless you know how to edit someone else into his uniform

It is not hard to see how Praise Martin-Oguike is both a good player, and an undrafted one.

If you want to know if he's a good player just look at any video of Temple's defense, find defensive end #50 (he also plays on the inside on some downs, or from an up position), and just WATCH him. That's all. Here are a few:

I don't need PFF to tell me the guy plays with perfect leverage, has incredible upper body strength pound for pound, pretty much NEVER looks completely blocked, is always tracking the ball and easily sheds blockers to get to it, and also has a nasty habit of beating offensive linemen in pass rush, and nobody in college has forced more fumbles (11) over the last three seasons. It's nice for PFF's statistics (as opposed to the ratings) to give you some confirmation that these things happen in games that you've not watched, but it's clear he's a good player. He looks and plays like James Harrison and/or Elvis Dumervil.

As for his athleticism, I notice his ten yard split was a 1.60, or 81st percentile. Yes, the 40 yard speed matters, but when it comes to the shorter distances that count most in pass rush, Praise's acceleration is up there with anyone else's. Regardless, he's no athletic dynamo.

So why did such a good player go undrafted? Three reasons really and they're very simple.

1. He's 6'0".
2. He runs a 4.88.
3. He'll be 24 years old as a rookie.

It's really as simple as that.

He is unusually old because he missed 2 years of football while dealing with rape allegations that I'm confident in declaring turned out to be false. A woman accused him of raping her in his dorm room, I believe in 2012. He was kicked out of school immediately. Charges were filed. About 18 months later as jury was being selected the prosecution finally got hold of the woman's cell phone, where they found text messages between her and her friends admitting that the sex was consensual and she was claiming rape because he refused to be in a long term relationship with her. Just like that, charges dropped, he was allowed back in school, he resumed his football career.

Thing is, when you're seeing a guy who is playing a physical position like DL, and he is at least 2 or 3 years older than most of the guys he's going up against, and he looks good, scouts gotta be skeptical about that. Just as they should've been in the case of Margus Hunt. So the age thing was one strike going against him. His height was strike two, and his 4.88 speed was strike three. That's it. You're out. There's not even any need for tape eval at that point, as far as the NFL is concerned with respect to investing an expendable resource.

That said, don't be surprised if Praise makes the roster and is a good player.

These two matchups in particular I would watch for a reason:

2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwguQP1SiAg
2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-XQI1ygSBs

The left tackle that South Florida had in both these games was Kofi Amichia. He was drafted by the Packers this year. He's an NFL player. He's 6'3.5" and 305 lbs and ran a 4.99 at his pro day, did 32 bench reps, 33.5" vertical. There are 260 lbs tight ends and defensive ends that don't touch those numbers. Amichia really did not have much of a problem blocking Haason Reddick, that I noticed. It's one reason Reddick is clearly moving out to a real linebacker position where his pass rushing will be limited mostly to a blitzing role.

But Amichia did constantly have trouble with Praise Martin-Oguike (again he's #50 at defensive end, switches right to left, also plays NT on obvious passing downs). Particularly pay attention to Praise's hands, and the way he manipulates Kofi, pulls him to the ground, etc. He was outstanding.

In all the vids you posted, he gets to the QB with regularity, despite not seeming particularly fast. Seems really aware of what the QB is doing at all times. You can see how he has so many forced fumbles. He damn near got the QB's throwing arm on multiple occasions throughout them all. Seems like a high floor, lower ceiling player that can provide rotation and much needed depth.

But then again, I don't watch all that much tape, so WTF do I know.

What you need to know really is that everything that drew them to Charles Harris also drew them to Praise Martin-Oguike. This was thematic.

They sat in the playoffs and watched with horror as James Harrison, who is really no more athletic than either Charles Harris or Praise Martin-Oguike, and certainly is no bigger than those two, single-handedly WRECKED Miami's offense. And of course, this whole time, they've been employing Cameron Wake not as a third down pass rush specialist as they initially thought he would be because he didn't fit a prototype, but as an every-down defensive end because that's how he was making the most impact. They found religion that way.

Miami front office are prototypers to their core, but they decided you know what, at this position, there's a competing prototype. That acknowledgment had them looking at things like bend, flexibility, hand use, leverage, short area acceleration, etc. The things that make a Cameron Wake so good despite not being a 6'5" and 270 lbs dynamo. Charles Harris and Praise Martin-Oguike both have great bend, great leverage. They just look like great football players. So Miami will try that out for a bit and see how it works out for them.
