time to start looking the running backs for next year's draft probably between 3rd and 5th rounds, anybody have an idea who might be a good pick

I like Noel Devine of WVU if he comes out...he is a junior....probably goes in the 2nd round. I also like Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech. I think Spiller will go in Round 1 and we probably won't take a RB in the first round. There is a fullback at Stanford who looks like the 2nd coming of Larry Csonka named Toby Gerhart......I'd love seeing him in a Phin's uniform. He seems like he has it together:

Depends on what you're looking for......

If you're a team looking for a 230+ pound power back that will push the pile...pick up tough yards inside....etc...but won't break many long one's....here's a few guys who should fall somewhere in that range....

Anthony Dixon / Miss St.

Toby Gerhart / Stanford

LeGarrett Blount / Oregon

Charles Scott / LSU

Matt Asiata / Utah

Harvey Unga / BYU

If you're looking for a more balanced back in the 210-225 pound range....that can run with power inside.....bust it to the outside for big yardage....effective catching passes out of the backfield...etc....

Montario Hardesty / Tennessee

Evan Royster / Penn St.

Ben Tate / Auburn

Keiland Williams / LSU

Keith Toston / Oklahoma St.

Ryan Matthews / Fresno St.

Javarres James / Miami

If you're looking for smaller (205 pound or less) backs that are versatile and more effective on the perimeter and in open space....

Graig Cooper / Miami

Roy Upchurch / Alabama

Damion Fletcher / Southern Miss

Joe McKnight / USC

Michael Smith / Arkansas

Dexter McCluster / Ole Miss

i would not like another rb like ronnie, would like more of a rb like d'angelo williams, we need a more speedy rb, we already have polite, and hilliard to get the tough yards.

I can tell you right now you don't want Graig Cooper. He's a good kid with a good head on his shoulder, nice guy all around but he's scared. He plays scared. He doesn't follow his blockers well and he doesn't hit holes right away. He runs from sideline to sideline too much and dances in the backfield for too long.

The thing about almost all of the backs in this draft is they're going to be best suited as complimentary backs in a 1-2 punch......I see very few that have the complete skillset to be 3 down backs in the NFL...

But for my money.....I think Hardesty is going to be a steal for somebody....probably my favorite back in this draft....I have a feeling he's going to be one of those guys that turns out to be a much better pro than collegiate player...

batch out of texas tech would be a great 3rd down back he can catch and run the draw well and he can lower shoulder some to get a tough yard but will cobbs coming back ricky running like the 02 ricky and lex coming on and lou to get any 2 yards needed i dont see us drafting a back unless its a sleeper that might be on the practice squad for a year or two like lex

Jahvid Best is a back that I like alot, but he will more than likely go late 1st round/early 2nd.

CJ Spiller and Jahvid Best will be drafted in the first round, which is too high for us. We have other demanding needs that need to be addressed first. I think Noel Devine is a great option. He reminds me of Maurice Jones Drew. Even though Jones Drew has more power than Devine, they are both undersized and explosive. Devine we can pick up in the later rounds, and for him to complement Ronnie Brown (assuming he comes back) would make the Dolphins offense actually pose a threat.

before everyone goes rb draft crazy........

yes! we need one. i seriously doubt the team brings ronnie brown
back, and after his latest injury, plus the fact he cant get yards out
of standard run formations, he SHOULD be gone.

what will ricky do? who knows. he could retire, quit, let go, etc...
but whatever happens, it wont be long untill it does. he didnt want to
play after this season. he still may not!

COBBS is better than ronnie brown. and if he got the all the carries
brown did in the wildcat, he would have been BETTER! why? he is
faster, has better moves and can hit the hole FAST and get the ball
to the house. now, should he be back and in good shape, we have a
starting rb. if rw comes back, cobbs and williams would be one hell
of a 1-2 punch.

LEX HILLIARD!! 240lb nightmare. hey, 3 plays dont make a legend, but
those limited runs he got against the panthers were eye openers for
sure! that hand off on 3rd and 16 he busted off for the 1st down was
pure running skill. power AND moves. hopefully, we will see much more of
him and soon! but if this is what we can expect out of him, we have our
feature rb.

now my point.........

KORRY SHEETS!! remember him? he is 210lbs of speed and moves. is a great
ball carrier and a great pass catcher. the perfect change of pace back. and
maybe more, who knows. his senior bowl performance was great i thought.

if we are going to keep the wildcat in any kind of continued form, he is a guy
with the skills to do it. and from what is being reported, they are working him
into the cat at a fast pace.

so, we have guys. guys that at this pont, i dont see us drafting that position
at all in this draft unless they think ricky will retire and they are not going
to continue [fingers crossed] with ronnie brown.

if those two things happen they may will have to draft a rb at some point.

ricky, cobbs, hilliard and sheets look pretty damned good to me right now.

i think we'll be using a late round pick on a rb...especially with ricky already saying he's hanging em up after next season...

we need an explosive change of pace guy at minimum...
